Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

Looking for a house in one of these areas, still trying to narrow down the search. Anyone have any positives or negatives of any of these areas and their school districts? I have some of my own opinions but would love to hear what others have to say.

Re: Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

I live in Sayville and I can honestly say that I LOVE almost everything about it.

It's small enough that you get to know your neighbors and all the teachers know your kid by name and remember them.. but it's big enough that you aren't constantly up each other's backsides.

The other night we went to the science fair and the principal was (as usual) greeting every kid and their parents by name. It's not something you always see in bigger districts.

People just CARE around here. Most people take pride in their homes and take care of their properties, they care about their neighbors and it's never unusual to see people shoveling out other people's driveways during snow. People care about the business and Main Street - you go into a store and people greet you because they know you. People care about the community - come to any of the family events and you will see a huge turnout. And there are lots of events - SummerFest, Seafood Fest, Pirate Festival, Apple Festival, Miracle on Main Street.

It's just a really great little community.

As to Oakdale.. I think it's GORGEOUS. Some of those streets by the water are stunning. And I've heard nice things about the school district (I think it's Connetquot).

I have some friends who live in Holbrook too and I think it's very nice (although I wouldn't want to live TOO close to the airport but that's a personal preference). Holbrook is Sachem which is a great school district, but very large.

Re: Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

Ronkonkoma is just north of Sayville, and just east of Holbrook area. It's in the Connetquot SD. Very similar neighborhoods to Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook, Bohemia.
I really like the Connetquot SD. It's on the bigger side, so it's got a lot of resources, but not as big as a district like Sachem, so DC won't be a tiny fish in an ocean.

Are you looking to stay close to the south shore?

Connetquot SD goes from the south shore, up to Lake Ronkonkoma, so Oakdale and Bohemia are at least partially in the SD.

I checked out the town map, and the SD map, and I'm pretty sure Ronkonkoma is completely within the Connetquot SD. Lake Ronkonkoma is part of Sachem. It's a separate town, but the zip code is the same, so they are often combined. Lake Ronkonkoma is in Brookhaven, but Ronkonkoma is in Islip.

All nice areas. You will find taxes are probably lower in Holbrook out of the 3. The areas of Holbrook I would stick to are New England Village, Somerset Estates and Parkland. These areas are very well kept little communities and are not in the flight pattern so the airport makes no difference Chat Icon

I live in the "flight pattern" and you really get used to the noise and you don't really hear it after awhile.

Re: Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

I grew up in Holbrook and my family still lives there. I had a great experience and still love the area. I didn't grow up in New England Village but have friends who did and I agree, I love this part of Holbrook. I actually grew up fairly close to the airport and like a pp said, you don't really notice the sound of the planes all that much.

DH grew up in Sayville and has nothing but good things to say about the area and small town feel. I absolutely love going down to Main Street and walking around. A couple of years ago around Christmas, we were walking around the town, it was beautifully decorated, it was snowing and Christmas music was playing and I swear, I felt like I was in a snowglobe, lol. Oakdale, you can't go wrong with either. All these areas are really nice but if I was going to buy, I would look in this order:
Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

There's definitely some parts of Ronkonkoma that are Sachem. I have family that lives in Ronkonkoma (regular, not Lake) and they go to Sachem.

We just bought a house in Holbrook and love it!

I lived in Oakdale for almost 10 years and have a child that graduated from connetquot. I loved the convenience of the location, so easy to get to everything. Oakdale is a really nice area, you can't go wrong with any neighborhood. I thought the district was top notch through middle school, the high school experience was not as good in my opinion. There are some negatives IMO but that is true with every district.
if you have more specific questions about Oakdale you can FM me.
Good luck with your search!

Re: Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

I lived in Sayville for a short time and I loved it. It's very cute, downtown is great and I heard the school system is awesome.

We live in Holbrook right now in Parkland. I love, love, love where we live. I know all my neighbors and everyone is super friendly. I never had neighbors like this before. Neighborhood is kept nice and everyone looks after everyone else. You will always see people walking, biking, jogging or playing in the neighborhood. Sachem I hear is also a very good school district and it is quite large. DS is not school age so no first hand knowledge.

I don't know much about Oakdale but driving through occasionally is seems really nice.

As far a your price range, I believe Oakdale is most expensive, followed by Sayville and Holbrook being the least expensive.

Re: Sayville, Oakdale, Holbrook

I grew up in Oakdale, by the water ( Idle hour ) went to Idle hour elementary, When we were looking to buy a house, I chose not to look there. We all had to be inside before dusk every summer/spring because of what we called feeding time ( mosquitos) It was bad and there was nothing they could do about it...not even sprays..nothing worked and it was a real PIA to try to get all four of us kids to come inside from playing. Also the water level was high, no inground pools and bad cess pool issues all the time. Dowling was busy and lots of the college kids like to party, they are loud and will party in parking lots. There aren't many choices when it comes to dining or food shopping. IGA and Walbaums were the only places around when I was growing up. There are not many kids in the area. It's an older town, it will eventually turn over...but right now there are not many young kids.

Sayville I worked there for 10 years. Many of the stores are closing and the businesses aren't doing as well as they were..but the town is extremely friendly and it was also voted one of the friendliest neighborhoods to live . There are so many choices to go out to eat. Sayville is also a small school district...everyone knows everyone. What steared us from here was the high taxes for the amount of house. All though if taxes weren't an issue I would live there in a heartbeat.

Holbrook We just bought a house three years ago here. We really enjoy our neighborhood. A very young family crowd. Lots of kids playing outside all the time. We have 20 kids at one bus stop!!! I live just outside the flight pattern. No planes fly directly over our house, but we see them and occasional hear them. I pay 6k a year for a three bedroom three bath house with almost a half an acre of property. I live less then a half of mile from three dif grocery stores, about ten great resturaunts, walking distance to parks and one minute to a 24 hour CVS. We are also three minutes from hopping on the LIE and five minutes from Ronkonkoma train station!!! The school district is large which we were initially worried about. Since DD was born hard of hearing...Sachem is known to have MANY resources available for people in need of any sort of special education. They are also very good at approving all help and funding it. Never had a problem through Sachem.
We almost bought a house in Sayville it was 12k a year for the same size house, I can take a drive for seven minutes from my house in Holbrook and Im there!
