I hate the hw floors in my living room. They were never finished when they were put in 40 someodd years ago. They had carpet over part so some is faded due to sun so its not like there all the same color and it drives me crazy I have young kids...cats....dogs is it better to just put laminate over the floors for now and wait till kids are older do refinish the floors? Or just refinish now? Does anyone have a good reccomendation for someone to refinish if I go that route....how much does that cost?

We just went through the same dilemma. We bought a house in September and the floors were so scratched up that they never looked clean. We went back and forth between putting laminate over the wood floor or refinishing. I will say, we only looked at laminate flooring at Home Depot, and for a decent laminate (that won't look cheap) it was going to cost us more than refinishing the wood floor ourselves. The laminate would easily cost us over $1000 to do our living room and one bedroom. I know my experience is skewed because we refinished ourselves, but DH did it for the first time and had no issues or problems. I would say, all in all, it probably cost about $400 to do.

To answer your question regarding kids: There are pros and cons to both. I am pregnant with our first so we contemplated that issue as well.
Laminate will not hold up as well with constant spilling
Hardwood floors is more susceptible to scratches and what not, but the look and value is worth it IMO
