I just use my dyson. It has a carpet and bare floor setting.

Our vac has that setting too but DH wants something smaller that can be used easily on the steps too

I use the Shark Navigator Liftaway. You can take the canister off and carry it up the stairs with you.
I love it!
We have a very big hairy dog, and this vacuum works wonders.
