Weeds

Bare with me people, I am so not a gardener, but looking to have more of a green thumb. DH and I recently cancelled our landscaper because we thought they were overcharging us for services and our lawn really never looked great. Case in point, our lawn has weeds along the outer edges of the lawn, running along where the fence is. We had a lot of bushes ripped up that were taking up space and so there was dirt in these spots. They placed down seed and weed preventer. Unfortunately what has happened is that a ton of grass grew there as well as a ton of weeds. Please help! What do I do? I know that sounds like such a silly question, but I really don't know if I'm supposed to pull the weeds (thereby pulling up all the grass that grew as well) or put down weed killer. If I'm supposed to pull them, is there something I can do better next time that the landscapers didn't do? Thanks for any help you can give this novice gardener!
