Question about Bottles

How many bottles and extra nipples will I realistically need?

I registered for 1 gift set which comes with 3-5oz bottles and 3-9oz bottles. I then added a set of 3 more 5oz bottles, for a total of 9 bottles (2 different sizes). I believe the 6 smaller bottles come with "level 1" nipples, the bigger bottles come with "level 2" nipples" and the gift set includes 3 "level 3" nipples. I added 2 extra nipples of "level 2" making 6 for level 1, 5 for level 2, and 3 for level 3.

Is this enough? Or should I have more bottles and nipples?

I want to try and exclusively breastfeed, so the bottles are only for when I want to pump, let DH feed the baby, out in public, or if I end up needed to supplement with formula.

Re: Question about Bottles

For now I just have a similar gift set. I don't know how many really you will need as I have no btdt experience but I have heard that often times moms have to change bottles/nipples due to babys preference, reflux, etc. Because of this I decided to stick with the one set for now and see if LO is comfortable with the brand I have before stocking up.

Re: Question about Bottles

Dont buy too many. I started by DS on the Avent and he had gas issues and it made it worse so I had to switch to Dr Browns. Now I have a slew of Avents that are collecting dust. YOu just never know which bottle they will like and you might have to switch.

So do you think I am starting with too many or that what I have is just enough for now?

Re: Question about Bottles

I think you are OK with what you have.

I would say that I had 3-4 bottles of each size...the 4oz and the 8oz (I used Playtex Drop-In Nursers with DD) and that got me through her entire time on bottles.

When you need to change nipples you pretty much see it coming...because the baby is sucking harder or whatever, and you just buy them as you need them, or buy replacements as you need them.

I wouldn't stock up too much becasue sometimes the baby will prefer one bottle over another. My sister went through 3 kinds of bottle before she found what her DD liked!

I agree with this. DS was breastfed and extremely picky about his bottles! We went through a few different kinds before we settled on one he would take.

I would keep what you have, but not wash/sterilize them just yet. If you can go to the store and just get a single bottle to try of the same brand I would do that.

As pp said about nipple sizes, you won't need to worry about that now. As a breastfed baby, I think we only went up to size 2 anyway with DS.

Will DC be going to daycare? By the time he was on bottles, I probably had 8 bottles or so of each. However, that won't be a for a while, so I wouldn't worry about it.

ITA. I started with playtex drop-ins and ventaires but also tried the first years breastflow ones. Then one day around 3 months old, DD flipped out and wouldn't take ANY of the wide-neck bottles anymore and we completely switched to the Dr. Brown's. I had 3 of each type at first, but had about 9 of the ventaires which were great until she rejected them. I ended up with 8 Dr. Brown's that we've used exclusively since 3 months old (I only had the large-size ones of those, no small ones).

Just keep some of them in the packages until you see what your baby likes and know that you may end up wasting some money on bottles but such is life. :)

Re: Question about Bottles

I also agree with the others. Don't go crazy with bottles. I received the 4 5oz born free and 3 9oz born free that I reg for. And I had gotten vouchers for some free 4oz playtex drop ins. For the first 4wks the born free were going great. But now I've learned DS is less gassy with the drop ins and now need to buy the bigger size.
Moral of the stry.. You don't know which will work for DC. Trial and error. Oh and don't bother with the extra nips. Just buy those as needed.
