Does the side I sleep on really matter?

Ive been trying to sleep on my left side but I toss and turn so much, I wake up on my right side, my back, my stomach, etc...

Does it matter which side I sleep on?

Re: Does the side I sleep on really matter?

the left side is the "better" side so to speak. when i was prgenant i had high blood pressure and the docs would always make me lay on my left side to help bring it down.
that being said, everyone tosses and turns so i woldnt be too overly concerned

For me, I have to change positions. Once I get up to pee, and come back I switch sides because I feel soreness. However I do end up falling asleep on my left because I feel more pressure when I lie on my right

Re: Does the side I sleep on really matter?

Your body will let you know if you shouldn't be sleeping in a certain position. Left side is optimal, but some people can sleep comfortably in any position. By the time I hit the 2nd trimester, I needed to sleep on my left side or propped up on my back. I got very uncomfortable if I was on my right side even for a short time. At 22 weeks, I still alternate between my left side and back.

I slept on my stomach for as long as I could...once the belly pops you wont be able to.

Re: Does the side I sleep on really matter?

I actually talked to my Dr about this since soo many books say sleep on your left. And because I was ONLY sleeping on my left my hip and shoulder were KILLING me like can barely move in the morning...

She said you can sleep on your left or your right, the only 2 things you should never do is sleep flat on your back or on your belly, which once you pop is impossible anyway... lol

As the baby gets bigger it can put pressure on your lungs and other organs which can restrict blood or air flow. I don't think this is as big of a deal in the first tri. Honestly laying on your back becomes very uncomfy as you get bigger any way so your body has a way of telling you if your positioning is no good.

Re: Does the side I sleep on really matter?

I have always been told by my Dr's that its fine to sleep in any position you are comfortable. When sleeping on your right or on your back the weight of the baby is on a major vein, if it is causing an issue YOU will feel it before the baby does. No Dr has ever said I can't sleep on my back and I have done it with all of my pregnancies because of hip and back problems. How do they put you when you are in labor in the hospital for hours on end? Flat on your back! Don't worry, sleep how you are comfortable.

My dr said sleeping on the left side is best, but especially in the beginning, sleep how you are comfortable. I slept on my back until like 22, 23 weeks, until it got uncomfortable. Now I flip back and forth to my right and left sides.

You can sleep on your back just not flat on it after a certain point. I'm 22+ weeks and just started feeling uncomfortable last night on my back when I wasn't propped up enough. Once I sat up a little more, I was fine. I have to alternate between the left side and my back because those are the only comfortable positions for me right now.

Re: Does the side I sleep on really matter?

Sleep however you are comfy. I slept on both sides and even my back up til the end. You will know when you can no longer sleep on your back or if one side is no longer comfy. Just listen to your body and you will be fine.
