Do you ever watch those makeover shows on HGTV or DIY
you know, the ones where they surprise the homeowner with a big reveal? Well, there are a few times that I'm like EWWW that's so gross and would be so upset if they ruined my house like that. I mean, do they ask your style and get opinions before they go ahead and spend so much money and do so much work?

DH's cousin has a friend that went through this process. Basically the owners gave them idea of what their taste was and that's it.... the the only time they were able to give there opinion. Luckily the owners did like what they saw but even if they didn't.. they paid NOTHING. I don't care if you want to come in and make my ceiling purple for all I care. Colors and decor can always be changed. I would have piece of mind though that all the structural items in that room and area were updated (electric, floors, windows, etc).
I mean it's free... could anyone REALLY complain?

Even on the designs i've hated, the owners loved everything. I guess as ugly as they make it, it's still better than it was.
I would love to be on one of the HGTV shows!

If it costs me a ton of money to "fix" all of the bad designs, then yes, I would complain.
I "knew" someone on another forum that worked on one of the Extreme Makeover episodes. He said they cut so many corners, he would never want to own that house. It may have passed code, but it definitely won't last very long. It's all to look pretty for the show.
I've also read stories about several people who "loved" the new designs given to them for free, who completely changed everything very soon after the show left. They were just coached on how to react. "Free" isn't always worth it.
Some shows are better than others. There's a couple of shows that focus on structural integrity, and those are good shows. The pure design ones, though, I'm usually not a fan of.
Mike Holmes I would let in my house. He seems to talk to the owners about a lot of ideas, gets feedback, and has a design taste that I usually like.

Any of those crasher shows on DIY Nework yes any day.
Plus Mike Holmes is the reason I was so hard on buying my 2nd house. Mike can take it all down and make it right.

This I def agree with. I tell DH though that Holmes on Homes show should be rated R for home owners and/or buyers lol.
I have nightmares because of that show lol.
