Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
I love our fireplace/mantel. It is one of the reasons I fell in love with our house.
BUT we have a big problem with the layout of our living room. The fireplace/mantel takes up prime real estate in our small living room. For now, we have made it work with a sofa and an arm chair but we need more seating. I'd really like to get a sectional, but with our current layout, it is just not possible.
DH and I have been throwing ideas around about how to make the best use of the space we have and the idea of moving the TV over the fireplace came up. I have been opposed to hanging our TV over our mantel for a bunch of reasons but these are my main ones:
1. i don't want to feel like i'm sitting in the front row of the movie theater while watching tv
2. if we ever get our FP in working condition, I am pretty sure hanging the TV over the fireplace is a big no-no
3. i LOVE the mantel and want to be able to decorate it with mirrors, picture frames, flowers, holiday decor, etc.
So we kinda threw around a solution to #1 & #3 and that would be lowering the mantel considerably (as far as we can depending on the slope of the bricks behind the wall) to make it more like a console (still keeping the fireplace, which we want to replace with a gas or electric FP in the future) so that viewing the TV could be more comfortable & I could still decorate with smaller things if I wanted.
Would having a low mantel look funny? I figured it would be similar to those TV consoles with the FP built in that are really popular. Has anyone seen a low FP mantel before? Any one have pictures?
Sorry this got really long. TIA!!!!!!

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
DH and I are getting ready to go into contract on a house that has a large fireplace mantel as well. We have room to make it a formal living room with no t.v. but we're not sure yet. DH's primarily against putting a tv over the fireplace b/c according to him (he's a techy guy), when watching t.v. it should be at eye level, you sholdn't be looking up or looking down to view the screen. Imo, I somewhat thinks it kind of takes away from the beauty of the mantel itself. Would you be able to wall mount the tv anywhere?

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
We mounted our tv above our gas fireplace. Yes, it is high, but it doesn't bother me. However, I am not a huge tv watcher. My DH is not crazy about the height of it (he watches a lot more tv than I do), but we needed more room for furniture so we got rid of our wall unit and mounted it above the FP.
This is a pic from when we first had it done.
The only way I would take it down now is if we doubled the size of the room with an extension. Not sure when / if that will ever happen, so for now it stays!!!

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
We have ours over our mantel.
It hasn't been issue for us viewing-wise... Maybe we're far enough away from it? And I consider our LR to be pretty narrow, so maybe we're just used to it.
Can you post pics of your LR? Maybe someone has a better suggestion for you...

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
this is from MLS with the previous owner's furniture. the FP & Mantel are on the right
our couch is under the window now and the TV is on the far wall over a console. (where the 2 frames are)
we want to get rid of the console and put a sectional under the window and around to the far wall.
hope this helps someone
grr having problems, hope it works this time... Image Attachment(s):

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
Did you buy the sectional?
If not, can you switch it so it juts out to the other side and keep the TV in a console on the far wall?
Otherwise, to be honest - I think my LR is narrower than and/or the same size as yours and we don't seem to have an issue with the TV above the mantel...

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
thanks for the response!
we haven't bought a sectional yet.
Our first thought was to leave the TV & console on the far wall and do a sectional with the long side under the windows and the short side jutting out towards the fireplace but we decided that it would be too squished and it would box off the living room. That's when we came up with putting the sectional in the corner and the TV above the mantel - to help open it up.
i think we're going to go for it! i'll post pics when we're done - probably not for a while though!!!

Our TV is above the mantel. When we bought our house there was a cubby already built in.

Re: Need some opinions on putting our TV over our mantel
Great room! The mantel is really nice but does look high. If it's not too costly I would lower it to where the bottom of the rectangle is, a few inches above the brick.
Like this... which would put your TV lower.
If you don't want to mess with the mantel I would put the TV against that back wall and find a sectional that has a short end that goes across from the TV and a longer section that goes along the window.

What's on the opposite side of that room? It may look nice kinda sectioned off with a small console table behind that part of the sectional.

Thanks!! This is exactly what we were thinking about doing!!!!!
The picture was taken from standing in the doorway between the LR and the Kitchen. The front door is to the immediate left, so i think a console would be too much clutter but trust me I've thought about it!!
Thanks for the visual, I was worried it might look silly but it doesn't at all!!!
PS I love your house!
