Anyone have experience with making a Homeowners claim?
This is the week from HEEEEELLLL!!!
So we had a slab leak this week and luckily there was no real damage. We were able to reroute some of our plumbing through the attic and in doing so we avoided having our floors ripped up and the foundation cracked into.
Now it seems we have a SECOND slab leak but this time we *think* it's under the bathroom room right next to the shower/tub and right in front of the toilet. If they need to get to these pipes the only way to do so is to rip up all of the tile and dig down into the foundation. There is a chance too this may affect the tub and toilet. Clearly it would be a HUGE mess and costly to fix everything.
So here is my question, has anyone ever made a claim through their Homeowners policy for something like this or something similar? I know each policy and what is covered will be vary but in general, would something like this fall under Homeowners? If so, how long does it take to get everything settled and do you usually get enough $$ to really cover all the repairs? Just wondering how it all works if I have to go this route. TIA!!

it may be covered depending on what caused the leak if it falls under "wear and tear" it probably won't be covered. Your best bet is to call your insurance office and explain the scenerio they should be able to tell you prior to you actually filing the claim if there is a chance that it will be covered.

Just a little feedback- any mention of a "leak" is normally not cov'd.
Insurance covers sudden and accidental.
In this situation since its an unknown source I would take the chance and place the claim, let them identify what the source is, ...with hopes there is some coverage.

Thanks! It has been our experience (as this will be out 5th slab leak ) that the pipes just either degrade over time and then rupture or rupture because they got cold for too long and then once the heat runs through them they burst. Headache!! Whoever thought putting pipes in the foundation of a house with zero access was a good idea is an idiot! lol
I will talk to them and see what they say. To me, wouldn't it make sense that if pipes ruptured (through NO fault of your own) and caused subsequent damage to repair homeowners would cover it? One of my friends had her pipes burst in the basement and they were fully covered for all the resulting damage. I'm HOPING that if we end up with a mess on our hands we're covered too. Guess I won't know until State Farm calls back.
Maybe I will say pipe RUPTURED instead of leaking...........which really is more accurate to be honest. It's not usually a leak, it usually ends up flooding the foundation under the floors.
Thanks for the insight!

Good times....
This happened to us while I was PG. I came home, walked through the foyer & into the LR to hear "squish". I turn on the lights to found our LR & part of our hallway carpet soaked. Plumber came, it was a slab leak/rupture. Our floors were ripped up, our tile & laminate in the kitchen & foyer all ripped up, drilled into the concrete, pipes repaired, carpets cleaned, all tiles & laminate replaced with new, dehumidifiers & fans - all covered.

SF will call back and yes, if pipe burst/ruptured...the water loss/damage will be covered..just not the pipe.

They finally called back BUUUUT the agent herself had almost NO clue how slab leaks are handled. Literally, she was no help at all!!
In any case, she *thinks* we may be able to get some of it covered but she isn't sure so she is going to file the claim and see what the claims adjuster says. I'm not holding my breath because to be honest, unless they give us a substantial amount of money back there is no point, we have a $1000 deductible to pay first. So if they are only going to give us a few hundred bucks towards the damage and repairs it makes zero sense to actually have the claim be put through it. Guess we'll see. Such a headache!

That is awful! So much damage, you must have had a heart attack. It's so upsetting when you get a slab leak.
We had one of our leaks when I was pregnant too, not really the best time for your house to spring a leak! I was a stressed out mess.
Glad to hear they covered it. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately depending upon how you look at it, we don't have any actual damage luckily. The damage will be from them needing to destroy the floors, if need be, to repair the pipes. I think that's why I may strike out with homeowners.

Shes prob a sales/customer licensed rep and we are not trained to know every single loss and how its cov'd. sometimes there is a grey area and takes sending a claim in to get an adjuster to come look. They are the pros. She did the right thing.
Otherwise yes, this is one of those situations that s ux since you are unsure of outcome. Hope it works out for you.

Now we wait for the plumber to do his thing and the claims adjuster to do his.
