New Fence notify neighbors?
Just a quick question, we do not speak to our neighbors after an incident last year anyway we are having a new fence installed, do we have to notify them?
I guess that also applies to the house behind us whom we have never met?
Thanks!

You don't have to. We only told one neighbor, but we are friendly with them.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
As long as the fence is staying on your property line, you don't have to notify neighbors.
We had it done last summer and our witchy neighbor gave the guys a hard time when they took down the old wood, rotted fence. She felt that fence was hers, but we had our title/survey in our hands and gave it to the fence co., so they measured exactly and the fence was ours. She hates PVC and wanted her wood fence. They offered to put it up next to our PVC for her, but she declined.
Our other two neighbors did not complain and complimented us when the job was done. We didn't tell them ahead of time, tho.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
we put a new PVC fence to replace our wood one that was going bad, it was technically our fence so we just put it up and didn't say anything. some people mention it to try and get the neighbor to chip in, but in our case we knew both neighbors wouldn't so we just did it.

Why would you have to if its your fence? You're paying for it, its on your property. No need at all.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
Ok thanks... So the fence company came over last night and looked at our survey turns out the old fence is on their property, he advised we leave the old fence and put the new fence in front of it on our property. I am not even positive now if it is our fence it was there when we bought the house...
I mean if the fence is on their property I would guess its their fence?

Yes leave it be and put your fence up on your property. If they say it isn't theirs, show them the property lines.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
I had to do this w/ my old house. The old, disgusting fence was on their property line so we put up the new fence back to back. They said they were going to pull down the old fence, but hadn't before I moved.

We are getting one installed next week, we didn't tell them, they didn't want to chip in so it can be a surprise.
When we asked them to chip in they said it was our fence and they wouldn't have one if it weren't there. I guess they like the open feeling of a yard .

Because we all benefit from it, it gives everyone privacy, esp when I have to chase their kids down the block because they don't stay in the yard, but they don't want a fence? The kids could have been in Ohio by now. I feel like houses around here are so close together it would be really weird to not have a fence and be in the backyard, so since most people do have fences why should only one person be responsible for it?

Our neighbors have extra property but they signed an affadavit acknowledging this. When we go to replace the fence we have to let them know because they have plants along the fence.

Fences are just one of those things people disagree on but if it's your fence and you want it, they you pay for it. A neighbor shouldn't have to chip in. If they were chipping in, would you ask for their opinion about type of fence? What if you want PVC and they want wood? What then?
Our neighbor is putting up a fence (their old fence seems fine though) and mentioned it - I got the feeling they wanted to ask us to chip in but they didn't ask, kwim? They asked if we wanted their fence people info in case we wanted to put up a fence too and coordinate fences. It was strange. Anyway, I said no thanks, that we aren't interested in putting up a new fence as we don't know how much longer we'll stay in our house. They have a fence and I'm fine with it. It looks in good condition. Why should I pay for them to change their fence? I am not asking them too and at the end of the day, it's theirs and I have no right to it in the future.
I don't ask my neighbors to chip in for my landscaping and the neighborhood benefits from my front lawn looking nice.

I can see your point if we didn't agree on the type of fence to put up, but he already has white PVC in the front so I would assume he want to match it. The fence is falling down and rotting, it's def time, I just think if everyone was responsible for the left and back, that would make things easy if there were only white PVC fences out there lol. I personally don't care what anyones lawn looks like, just stay off mine.
it just irks me that someone else will benefit from my hard earned dollar, esp when I chase their kids down the block and they don't know they are gone.

I
I can understand why people may think to ask to chip in, however I would never ask a neighbor to chip in for a fence. Sort of tacky if you ask me. And what if you ask and they say no? Talk about awkward!
I just had my fence done and basically all three sides of my fence run along the property line (half run on my side, half run on their side). I just informed all three neighbors I was changing the fence. I let them know when they would expect the change. And I made sure nobody had any dogs or animals that they let out on random.
Just because they benefit that doesn't mean they should feel entitled to chip in. I put a second story on my ranch. my neighbors benefit by having the average sales price in the neighborhood go up. I didn't ask them to chip in for my dormer. KWIM?
All three neighbors were very happy I did the work. I think that leads to better neighborhood relations vs. asking them to pay. The one neighbor had PVC on three sides except for the side that bordered me. Now he has on all four. Not a big deal and I am not annoyed that he "benefited". Good for him if you ask me. If you don't want them to "benefit"... then you can wait until they want to do it.

Because its on YOUR property. Look, I have the best lawn on my block, I take pride in MY curb appeal. Should I ask my surrounding neighbors who benefit from it to help pay for it? NO.

I agree with JennZ.
This isn't a potluck party that everyone should contribute to. It's going to be your fence, on your property, therefore you pay for it and you own it. I also don't get this chipping in mentality. Where does it end then? What if you wanted to replace it? What if it gets damaged? What about choosing the color or style? Also, how then would ANYONE know who is responsible if others chip in for a fence?
You own a house. Your home, your property, your choice and your money if you want privacy. Apparently it hasn't bothered the neighbors enough to put one of their own up, so it is what it is. If you want the fence badly enough for privacy, yes they benefit but you are the one who wants the privacy more than they do clearly if you are planning to put that fence up.
I think the chipping in concept is absolutely childish in mentality, when it comes to someone who has the money to own their house. They should have the money to pay for their own fence if they want it badly enough. Just ridiculous concept IMO to even remotely think someone else should or might chip in b/c they will benefit.
If you planted bushes for privacy, would you expect your neighbors to chip in for those too? If I beautify the exterior of my home, my neighbors benefit from the improved view from their house. Where do you draw the line? It's your house and your property so you pay. No offense to you honestly. This topic irks me every time.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
I just had new fence installed and I did only 1 of my neighbors. I wasn't even looking for them to chip in but they offered to share the cost of the side we share and they went ahead and did their other sides too. So I guess it worked out for both of us.
However, i noticed that my guys were on both sides when they took down the old one and when they installed. So I would say especially if you are not on good terms maybe you should notify them.

i know plenty of people that chip in when they are replacing fences. i guess when neighbors put up fences instead of putting up 2, 1 on each property line, they share the cost of the fence separating their property. i know that in some communities this is the norm and it others it isnt. there is no right or wrong IMO.

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
We let our neighbors know because, like a previous poster mentioned, the workmen were on their properties.
One of the neighbors actually asked us if we could ask the guys to take down their broken old wooden fence along our shared property line. We did & the workers were happy to do it since it made it easier for them to put up our new fence. The neighbors threw the workmen some extra $ for the removal & that was that!
I noticed some posters are discussing chipping in, we didn't do that. I agree with the thinking that it's our fence on our property so it's our expense. We didn't want to open the door to possible disputes re: repairs & property lines with any future neighbors that we might have...

Re: New Fence notify neighbors?
yeah, Not sure how the chipping in thing really would even work......
so lets say I'm your neighbor, you're getting a "nice" PVC fence put in on all sides of your property.
I have a "not nice" chain link fence in my backyard or wood or whatever...
you do your fence and 1 side of the 4 sides of my backyard hsa a white PVC fence. Not something I look at as a HUGE positive. nor is it something I'd really be willing to pay for.
thats never mind the fact that I didn't get a say on which style "we" would be putting there, nor the fact that I really don't like white PVC fences.
in my old house, my neighbors did this, put in a 6 ft tall plain white PVC fence, was it better than the existing fence? yeah I guess, they piled crap on their prop next to their garage that I could see through the chain link, now I can't...... but now I have a white plastic wall on one side of my property, that creakes in the wind

Ok thanks all! Since the old fence is staying up there is no way for them to go on their property. The other people I never met (they are behind us) so maybe I will go over there right before and just mention it. Thanks again!!
