Day 3 or Day 5 transfer

I am finally returning to the boards after my m/c in December and I am starting a fresh IVF cycle. I haven't done a fresh cycle in about four years, so this is all sort of new to me again. DH and I have to decide whether we want to do a three day transfer (we'd transfer two) or a five day transfer (we'd transfer one). The doctor briefly went over each option but I really need to talk to him again. Which day would you recommend?

Doesnt it first depend on how many they retrieve, are fertilized and their grade? Do they want you to decide before retrieval?

i think it depends on how many embryos you have. If there are alot then i would say try to do a day 5 transfer. From what i've been told....embryos that make it to day 5 means that they have a better chance of surviving after transfer.

For me, day 5 didnt work and for my next cycle we will try a day 3 transfer.

Re: Day 3 or Day 5 transfer

It depends on how many eggs they retrieve and fertilize that would determine 3 or 5 day transfer. The least eggs they retrieve and fertilize then you are more than likely to have a 3 day. If they get a lot then they would let them go to blast then transfer so you are looking at a 5 day. Word of advice you may want to consider if they go to blast transfering more than 1 embryo so you give yourself a higher chance that at least 1 would implant. Good Luck

Re: Day 3 or Day 5 transfer

We had the choice of 3 or 5 also. ER was 13, 10 fert. By the time we got to transfer on day 3 only 5 survived and 2 of those were good quality. We decided we didnt want to risk losing anymore if we waited so we transferred 2 on day 3. Turns out that the other 3 didnt make it so Im glad we didnt wait and risk that none of them would have made it.

Im now pregnant with one Chat Icon ..

Its like the other girls said, its all about the numbers and the quality. Good luck

Thanks for the feedback Chat Icon

I'm so confused now, though Chat Icon I have to fill out paperwork and decide PRIOR to retrieval if I want three day or five day, but after reading your responses, I don't know why.

You go to LI IVF, right? You can put down either on your boarding pass and the embryologist and doctor make the call after retreival and fertilization.

Yes I do! Chat Icon Thanks for your response!

So here's my next question...I have to decide HOW MANY to put back in. If we were doing a three day, we already decided to put back in two. But with a five day, aren't your chances of implantation even greater? I'm not sure if I should put the two or one in.

Re: Day 3 or Day 5 transfer

I'll share my experience with you. First IVF I had 13 embryos, all made it to day 3 and 7 made it to day 5. We transfered 2 on day 5- I got pregnant with my DS. 4 made it to freeze and none resulted in a pregnancy.

2nd IVF- 4 embryos, all made it to day 3- I insisted on a day 3 for fear of losing them. Transfered 2 on day 3 and I'm pregnant with twins. The other 2 did not make it to freeze.

I think alot can be said for day 3 because the embryos are put back where they belong and I believe have a better chance of survival than in a petri dish.

That is a very personal decision and depends on your comfort level with twins Chat Icon. Implantation is greater with a day 5 because it has a higher chance of being genetically normal. I personally, would have put back 2 regardless of the day. This is a great conversation to have with your doctor the day before the transfer. I would think the quality of the embryos would also play a part in the decision, so it might not be a decision you can make just yet.

Me personally? I would never go through all the rigmarole of IVF and only put back one, but I understand your misgivings about twins. I've done IVF twice and put back 2: once on day 3 and once on day 5. I got zero pregnancies, and all the embies looked beautiful. So you just have to keep in mind that putting back 2 day 5s that look great does not necessarily mean twins.

As far as day 3 or day 5, every doctor I've had has made that call based on what the embryos looked like on day 3. It's seems irresponsible for the practice to push you into a premature decision for practicality's sake. JMO

I hope no matter what you end up with the singleton you're hoping for Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
