PCOS

How did you get this diagnosis? Is it different than just having cysts? I had a cyst when I was 17 and it burst on it's own. I went on birth control for them and never had an issue again. Now that I am off the pill to TTC, I have been having a lot of localized pain in my left ovary. Just curious if cysts could mean something other than PCOS. Thanks in advance!

Re: PCOS

there is no one way to test to see if you have PCOS.
I have cysts as well that have nothing to do with my PCOS. It could be that you have what is called a "functional cyst" that will not hinder you in any way to in TTC. I have localized pain in my ovaries too, usually around the time I'm supposed to O, but i don't really know if I am actually O'ing or not. and now that AF is here, the first few days I had really bad pain in my ovary as well. But that does not mean you have PCOS.
You would have to have blood work done to see if anything was out of whack to even try to confirm a diagnosis.

Thanks, I left my GYN a message. It's probably not PCOS given that my periods are every 27 days and I don't have any other symptoms. But who knows. I just hope this won't hurt my chances to get pregnant!

Re: PCOS

I was diagnosed based on the results of my blood tests. I had issues with certain hormones and my thyroid. I don't remember the specifics.

Re: PCOS

Why do they call it poly cystic ovary syndrome if you don't have to have cysts to have the diagnosis? That makes no sense! But I guess nothing really makes sense when it comes to TTC!

PCOS is like a blanket term for several ovulatory issues which is why theres no standard test for it. basically if your hormone levels are wacky (esp. high LH:FSH ratio) you're labeled PCOS. if you have irregular cycles, you're labeled PCOS. if you have cysts on a fairly regular basis (esp. if they throw off your hormone levels) then you're labeled PCOS.

IMO any ovulatory or hormonal dysfunction is some form of PCOS. many ob/gyn only have a very basic understanding of PCOS and don't truly know how to dx or treat it (other than throwing clomid at you). so many women are told that they don't have PCOS or that they "might" have PCOS when they have treatable symptoms. it also should really be dx with a sono AND bloodwork, and not sono alone.

Re: PCOS

I have cysts but do not have PCOS because I ovulate and my periods are fairly regular.

Currently (at least the alst time I was at the gyno) I had 2 cysts on my R ovary- 1 was a hemorrhagic and the other one was clear. They're painful and can be a symtpom of endometriosis- which CAN cause fertility issues.

My dr gave me 3 options:

1- do nothing and see if your body will resolve them on their own (I chose this one since we wanted to TTC).

2- Go on BCP so I don't ovulate.

3- Surgery to remove them and check for endometriosis. This may need to happen if they get too large or if we're TTC for over 6 months with no success.

I really hope is just a minor thing for you. Chat Icon
