How many months should I wait before seeing a RE?
If we don't get a BFP this cycle we'll be moving onto our 6th month of ttc. I've heard some doctors say up to a year is normal but I've been having irregular cycles, no luck getting a positive opk, a short luteal phase based on temping, and some other unusual symptoms. Is it too early to meet with a RE? I feel dumb but until joining the ttc board I never heard of a RE so I don't know much about what they do but I've been starting to get an idea based on other posts. I met with my ob/gyn and she didn't seem to knowledgeable about my issues. She even seemed to have a hard time reading my temp chart with really surprised me.
Also, any recommendations for a good RE in Suffolk county?
Thanks!

So in 6 months you never had a +OPK? If that's the case, then now is a good time to see an RE. It usually depends on your age - if they recommend 6 months or 1 year of TTC before seeing an RE. However, if you have never seen a +OPK, then I think 6 month is long enough.
My RE is in Manhattan. Sorry I can't recommend anyone in Suffolk but I'm sure other girls on this site can.

I agree, with no positive OPKs for 6 months id say its time to at least consult with an RE. Generally if youre under 35 they say a year, and 6 months if youre over 35. But i think most RE's would see you due to the OPK issue.

Thanks, I actually have only been using opks for 3 months, but I guess that it still kind of a long time to not see a positive. It usually gets close but I've never seen the test line darker or as dark as the ref line

You can see an RE whenever you are concerned and ready. We were only trying a few months before I felt we needed to go to an RE.

I waited 2 months. I knew I had PCOS and figured seeing an RE right away was the 'fast track' .. umm yes, this was my fast track..... Two years of endless needles, multiple pregnancy losses, and an application to a surrogate agency... and this is me on a fast track

I didn't have a reason to think anything was wrong so I waited a little longer, but I know the opinion here is that if you suspect a problem, see someone sooner. Good luck!

Re: How many months should I wait before seeing a RE?
If you are asking this question, I would say now is a good time to go...I always say follow your gut. I went after trying for 7 months and eventhough i had extremely irregular periods (cycles anywhere from 34-67 days) i was still shocked to find out I had endometriosis and a thyroid disorder (the RE - reproductive endocrinologist, discovered both of these things). I did have to tell the insurance that i had been trying for over a year in order to get approved to see the RE so keep that in mind depending on your insurance carrier, but I just said it was over a year and they approved it with really no further questioning.

Also remember just because you go get checked out by a RE now doesnt mean you have to immediately jump into medication or procedures if there are no obvious issues.

Re: How many months should I wait before seeing a RE?
I thnk it is a wise decision, esp if you feel something is not right. You can always go, have a few tests run and then go from there. They will start with basic blood tests and sonos during your cycle to determine if and when you are ovulating.
Also you may have to tell a white lie to your insurance co. that you have been trying for a year, even though it hasnt been that long.
Which OPK's are you using and are you using them day 10 and on?

This.
The longer you wait the more missed opportunities to get pregnant you will have. I'm irregular, I am all over the place, and I rarely ovulate on my own. Without an RE there was no way I was getting pregnant. I just told my OB/GYN that based on my history and my lack of consistent cycles I wanted to be seen by an RE, this was after only 2-3 months of TTC, and she agreed.
Two weeks later I went to an RE and three months later I was pregnant with my DD. BEST thing I ever did was make that appt. I *personally* wouldn't wait, better to be proactive then to sit back and just cross your fingers every month. Good luck!

Re: How many months should I wait before seeing a RE?
I never waited. We saw an RE as soon as started ttc because I had been diagnosed with pcos at 16 so I knew I didn't want to waste time. If you aren't getting a postive OPK I'd say call and make an appointment.

Re: How many months should I wait before seeing a RE?
Thanks for all the helpful responses ladies! I think AF is due soon so when or if She shows I'll make an appointment. I've only been temping for2 months so hopefully that will be enough to give the dr some insight into my cycles.
One more question: do I need a referral from my regular ob/gyn?

I would go for piece of mind. If something is wrong I think it is better to find out sooner than later. I hope nothing is wrong! Good luck!
