Re: homeowners insurance
Based on the areas where I sell the most, I usually tell my customers to factor in about an extra $125/month for homeowner's insurance.
The previous poster is right that it will vary depending on the size and features of your house (pool, alarm system, etc.) and where it is (down by the water will cost more, for example).

The previous poster is right that it will vary depending on the size and features of your house (pool, alarm system, etc.) and where it is (down by the water will cost more, for example).
Also, If you have a finished basement, central air conditioning that will matter. The square footage of your home, is the garage attached or detatched, how many cars is it, how many bedrooms and bathrooms you have....that is all taken into account too. Where the house is located is another big factor.
Also, how much contents coverage you have, what other options you may or may not add, do you have oil or gas heat. Is the oil tank above or below ground?
Homeowners insurance doesn't take into account how big your property is. You are insuring your home and other structure on the property (garage, sheds) it doesn't matter to them if you are on a 50x100 plot or an acre.
If you have certain breeds of dog, if you have a pool or a trampolene your coverage will be more because you are an increased liability risk.
I know a great broker in Wantagh (who has clients all over the island) if you want to get a free quote I can FM you his info!!
ETA: to answer your original question, I live in a small cape 3 br 1.5 ba, detached 1.5 car garage, oil heat (tank above ground) no pool, no dogs, no trampolene, no where the water and have more coverage then I will probably ever need. I pay about $800 a year.

Re: homeowners insurance
I pay about $1300 for the year and I live in S. Shore Nassau north of sunrise hwy. That was actually the cheapest quote I got. Liberty Mutual wanted something like $2300
I heard alot of complanies (Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual)- are not even issuing policies on Long Island any more in certain areas.
ETA: I have a 4br, 2 bath cape

Re: homeowners insurance
I have Liberty Mutual and was going to use Geico but LM offered me a discount (which was $100 more a year but with better coverage) so I stayed with them and still saved about $500/year. We now pay $1,070.
