Anyone buy their home with DH/DW before being married?
If so, when it came time to file taxes, did you both deduct a percentage of interest and property tax or did one of you deduct all?
We bought in 2011 and are getting married this year. I'm curious as to how we should be splitting it. I have always done my own taxes, but I'm pretty sure I'll be needing some help this time around since it's a little more complicated.

We did. We bought in 2004 and got married in 2006. I forget how we did it though. I believe one of us claimed the house.

Yes, my accountant figured out how we would get the most cash back.

DH and I did, and I think we split the cost.
If that doesn't work for you, you can always have whoever put more towards the house or whoever can get the most out of the claim file.

My friends did. Get good accountant recommendations because he /she can figure out whats best for you. Once we got married we started using an accountant. A good accountat will get you every last penny owed back to you. I'm not just talking about real estate taxes. We deducted uniforms and laundry care among other things.

We bought our house in 2005 & got married 2006. Dh claimed all the house bc it entitled us to more back.

Well the house is in DH's name because we were looking at this house as a business investment and not our forever home. We bought the house in 2004 and got married in 2007. He would have claimed it anyway because it was more bennefical for him to.

Re: Anyone buy their home with DH/DW before being married?
We owned the house for 2 months before we were married. Our accountant always does our taxes two ways: married filing jointly and married filing separately. Every year it works out better for us to file married separately and then we let DH take all house deductions because this works out better too. I don't know why or how (that's why we pay an accountant )

The mortgage interested credits and real estate taxes were on my taxes only.

We bought our co-op a year before we were married. My dad is our accountant, he had DH claim it because it gave us the most money back in our refund.

see who has the most other items to add to their itemized deductions (student loan interest, charitable contributions, etc.) and who has the AGI... that's probably where it should go.
