How do you make you home feel "homey"?
I feel like a need a change around here! Some new decorating ideas (inexpensive lol).
How do you make your home feel "homey" or cozy?

Warm wall colors, ambient lighting, curtains, rugs and personalized details like travel souvenirs and photo frames scattered about.
Oh, and no shoes in the house, makes it so we can walk around comfortably barefoot. :D

Re: How do you make you home feel "homey"?
I think colors and fabrics/texture warm up a home and make it feel cozy. I don't like/need a lot of clutter, but simple and inexpensive things make a big difference, imo, such as:
colorful throw pillows and throw blankets on casual chairs and couches
simple centerpieces on tables (I have a white footed ceramic bowl from Williams-Sonoma that I put colorful fruit like pears or clementines in for a simple centerpiece)
decorative pieces/accessories -- in moderation -- that display your personal taste (photos, artwork, vases, books)
lighting -- the right lighting (table lamps, sconses, etc.) can really warm up a room.
Plants/fresh flowers

Re: How do you make you home feel "homey"?
ambient lighting and decluttering always inspires me to do more with my home.
sometimes i'll take everything down that is decorative, and start with a new fresh palette. some things make it back, and others go in a box to storage.
then i'll start looking at design blogs for more inspiration, and maybe take a trip to Home Goods or an antique shop. find things that speak to me...

I like using warm colors for accent pieces like curtains, vases, throw pillows. And I tend to take a 'less is more' approach by trying to keep clutter at a minimum so there's more focus on the accents and special things like photos that are on display.

Re: How do you make you home feel "homey"?
For me, comfortable soft furniture makes the home homey. And carpeting. All tile or wood floors just never feel cozy to me. I only have carpet in the living room but i feel it makes all the difference, plus we spend most of our time there.
We got an electric heater fireplace from bobs that our tv sits on. Super coziness!

Re: How do you make you home feel "homey"?
you know its kind of funny, i can always identify how i feel in someone elses home but in my own, i cant really tell if its cozy, formal, elegant, etc. but from very sweet compliments people have told us its very inviting and cozy. i wont say that an electric fireplace is cheap and i realize you werent really looking for a big ticket item but i cant honestly say, it was excellent money spent for what it is. its warm (literally), its so pretty and relaxing and its gives instant extra decor to the room with the flip of a switch. but for other ideas, we have a combination of personal photos, things we have brought back from places we have visited and loved for the wall or just for displaying and then also store bought more formal pieces for some sort of elegance. we have some candles around in warm colors and then other nice candle sticks. so i think a mix of "homey" personal things and store bought is the key. also, we used this paint color in the living room which i just love!...its technically an off white i guess, but it has this creamy yellow undertone and its so warm.
