TTC has come a longgggg way
I was reading up on HPT's and I stumbled across info on how they used to test for pregnancy in the 1920's until the 60's/70's....they'd inject a woman's urine into a rabbit, and then kill the rabbit to inspect the ovaries as an animal lover, I just CANNOT imagine having to go through that just to find out if I was pregnant!!! thank GOD they came up with a humane way to test for pregnancy and in the privacy of your own home! I will think about how grateful I am for this modern miracle the next time I POAS!!!
in case you're interested in the background of this: link to info

what??? that sounds awful! I always just thought they waited to see if their stomachs started to get bigger and their periods stopped coming!

me too!! I knew there wasn't any easy way of finding out other than the wait & see approach, I had no idea they had any preliminary testing prior to HPT's being invented. Those poor bunnies!! I read up on it a bit more and by the late 1930's they no longer had to kill the rabbits to see the effect on the ovaries (thank god!), they'd still use rabbits for the testing, but examined them without killing them.

Re: TTC has come a longgggg way
I just read this bit of pop history related to the phrase "the rabbit died" which was commonly used to spread the news you were in deed pregnant....
For some reason the phrase “the rabbit died” came to mean a positive test for pregnancy. Later on in the late 1930’s researchers found a way to detect if the rabbits ovaries had swelled or not without having to kill the rabbit. But since the phrase “the rabbit died” was such a fun way of saying a woman was pregnant, it has continued to this very day. For instance, the rock group Aerosmith in their 1975 song “Sweet Emotion” has this line: “Tellin' other things, but your girlfriend lied; Can't catch me cause the rabbit done died“.
I always wondered what that line in the song meant!! In my naive mind I thought he was referring to a Volkswagen Rabbit!! ("sorry hun, the car died" LOL)

I'm glad we just have to poas instead of killing a rabbit! Why couldn't they have used rats or some other pest instead?

I assume it is because we are more closely related biologically to rabbits. We actually still use rabbit's blood for various tests, like ELISA.
