Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
We live in Lynbrook on the North Side - not westwood but north of Sunrise. We have been here about 6 yrs and love it. Have 3 children - oldest is currently in 1st grade at West End.
Schools are wonderful here and community is great. Taxes are not the lowest but not the highest either and you get great schools.
Happy to answer any specific questions that you might have - feel free to FM me!

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
My stepdaughter is graduating from Lynbrook high school this year. If you have specific questions about the school district, let me know. She lives in Westwood so I know that area very well.

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
We do!! We live here almost 5 years. We are in south Lynbrook.
South of sunrise. I love my section.
As previous posters said, taxes tend to run higher if you are part of the village (we are) but it comes with the benefits too.
DH commute to Penn everyday via the centre ave stop (long bEach line). Great line and fast easy commute. We are within walking distance to the train but not close enough where it is annoying.
We are close to RVC andthe shopping in Oceanside, but like the quietness of Lynbrook.
We are actually in the process of selling (to move out east).

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
I went to and graduated from Lynbrook and still live here (in my parents house while we are in contract on our own home). Most of my family lives here as well which is why we chose to move 15 minutes east to Merrick. There are some very nice houses in Lynbrook. If you choose to live within the village of Lynbrook the taxes are, in my opinion, very high. The town of Lynbrook is pretty family oriented. You will find that many families have lived here for generations. My mom had some of the same teachers in middle school that I then had in middle school. The restaurants in Lynbrook are very limited (pizza and bagels) but RVC is next door with many choices.
I got a good education in Lynbrook and continued on to a great college. I had no issues with the elementary schools or middle school but some of the HS practices I have issue with (I'm a teacher so I don't think they are best practices) Back when I was there, if you were an AP kid you got a much better education than those average/above average kids. You were tracked into either regents or AP there was no switching for specific classes. I could have definitely handled a few of the AP classes but that was not the practice of the school. I have heard they have changed this though. I also feel like the AP kids got many more services that helped them with college (college writing etc.) I had a really hard time writing college papers my freshman year b/c it wasn't part of the regents curriculum at LHS. I also am not a fan of the technology that Lynbrook has in their classrooms. I know Waverly on the Southside of town has a lot that the PTA has purchased themselves but isn't in other schools. Again these are specific grievances and I've heard some of it has changed. All that said, I would have definitely considered buying a house in Lynbrook if I could have afforded the taxes and if my entire family wasn't here. Lynbrook is a great commuter town, DH works in the city. They have two train lines stopping in Lynbrook (Babylon and Long Beach).

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
Just want to say be careful, when looking at a house because Lynbrook houses could be in Valley Stream, Malverne, East Rockaway or Lynbrook school districts.
Dh and I are temporarily in Lynbrook, with hopes of eventually buying in Lynbrook.

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
I've posted this before so copying and pasting from another topic:
I grew up up in Lynbrook, still live here and am currently looking to buy a house/coop with FH here as well. The Lynbrook school district is one of the best on the entire island. You will get that small town vibe where everyone knows everybody and everybodys business. I like that there isn't a lot of big commercial businesses like Oceanside has because it prevents unnecessary traffic but traffic in Lynbrook around 5:00 is brutal when everyone is commuting home from work.
I agree somewhat with the PP about the AP track in the HS. I was one of those that was in AP and all the honors classes from when they first offered them back in the 7th grade. I am on the South Side and when meeting up with friends in the high school that went to West End and North Middle I feel that the South Side definitely gets a better education. Not sure if it was the teachers that are better or the kids that were in the programs I were in, since once you were in the honors program you were always with the same group of kids, this was nice but at the same time it was definitely very competitive and also gets annoying that you can't just be with the "regular" kids. Our workload was 20x what the other kids were doing, which in hindsight was valuable when going to college because it wasn't such a shock to have to actually study for a test and write a paper that was more than 2 pages.
There is also definitely an "underground" world of Lynbrook that often does not get publicity for obvious reasons. Many underage kids are borderline alcoholics - with many parents often sponsoring parties assuming that because they are home it is safer, obviously it is NOT, this ususally starts out in the 8th grade at the beach clubs down in Atlantic beach where you will find almost every Lynbrook parent- ie: SilverPoint, Sun&Surf, ABC, etc. Many of the Hewlett Harbor kids that attend Lynbrook schools often have major cocaine problems and now there are also section 8 houses in Lynbrook that come with their own issues.
Also, I would definitely recommend DO NOT buy a house that is in Lynbrook with East Rockaway schools unless you are planning to send your kids private because you will be paying high village taxes without the use of the Lynbrook school system. Same goes with buying in Lynbrook with Malverne or Valley Stream zoned schools. The only good combo of Lynbrook without Lynbrook schools is Lynbrook with Hewlett schools. Any questions, FM me.

Re: Can Anyone talk to me about Lynbrook
One approach to finding out about the school districts is to check outLong Island School Districts Report Cards
The statistics are quite comparable for Lynbrook and Valley Stream, and Malverne and East Rockaway are in a similar ballpark. I believe they all have the same dropout rate (3.9%).

Respectfully responding bc maybe this IS a problem, but I dont think this is a "problem" EXCLUSIVE to JUST Lynbrook. I have a feeling there a few other towns on LI that might have this same issue. and believe me...I totally agree its an issue, but just dont think it is limited to lynbrook.
