UPDATE: No HB No Pole....Any hope?

I have a beloved family member who had a MC earlier this year around 5 weeks. Now she is 6w 4 d since her LMP. She tested positive on an early HPT 12/6 and then a few days later on the dollar tree and digital tests. Her lines kept getting darker. She's been extremely nervous and very focused on each symptom as if another MC is impending. So, she went to the midwife today and was only measuring 5w3d. They did not see a fetal pole or a heartbeat. In your experience does this mean that a MC is imminent or does she still have some hope. Thanks so much for any insight ladies. My heart is hurting so bad for her. This limbo and the unknown are horrid.

UPDATE: Thanks for the responses ladies. Her doctor ordered bloodwork yesterday. I also got the dates wrong. She was 6w4d since her LMP but the sono measured 6w1d. Her Beta was 20,000 (nml) and her Progesterone was 6.6 (low). The OB said that there was a 25% chance of viability and felt that she would likely miscarry. He did not offer any progesterone supplement at this stage. Does this sound normal to you? She's not willing to give up yet, but is feeling pretty beaten down by it all.

Re: No HB No Pole....Any hope?

I never had sonos that early, but my second DD was measuring a full week behind at our 8 week sono. By the next appointment she was caught up.

My OB won't do sonos before 8 weeks for this reason, sometimes development can be off by days and it causes stress.

Many hugs that your friend gets a HB at the next sono.

Re: No HB No Pole....Any hope?

With both pregnancies all I saw at 5w was a sac. I think I was 5w4d with DD and maybe 5w3d with DS. With DS didn't see a HB until 7w.

That's what I was thinking - did the dr do blood work at all?

After a miscarriage I would think that the dr would have drawn blood after the + on the hpt, or at least put her on progesterone suppositories.

at 5w3d I think that's too early for a hb. Good luck to her !! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think there is hope. I agree with the pp - I think the dr should be doing more than just a sono in this case. If he is not, I'd consider going to someone new-someone very thorough. I have a recommendation is she is near Bethpage. fm me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hmm I can honestly say it may not look good. Unless her dates are off, and you just never know. I would tell her not to give up until 7 weeks or 8 weeks tops. I am not trying to be a debbie downer but just trying to speak from experience.

Not offering a prog supp is not normal IMO.... if i were her id go to a different doctor and request Crinone.

I agree. Also I don't know what my beta was at the time but at 5wk6d I had a sono and they couldn't see anything in the sac. Just two days later, there was a heartbeat. A dy or two can make huge difference. My doctors attributed the baby measuring behind to late implantation.

Re: UPDATE: No HB No Pole....Any hope?

i had no idea of my dates which prob why i ended up getting preg. but i thought i was around 6w.
we saw a very irregular shaped empty sac. i had low progesterone (basically throughout my preg i stayed on pills until my mid 20w ) the dr sent me home basically saying call me when you miscarry Chat Icon
the next week i went to the dr and there was a perfect shaped sac with our little heartbeat.
it def was a scary time.

The fact that your dr can say that to you .. "call me when you miscarry" .. is just horrifying!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm so glad it worked out for you in the end, but so sorry that you had to go through that!!
