Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
It depends on how many fertilized eggs you end up with. If you don't have many- you don't want to push a 5 day and run the risk of ending up with nothing.
My understanding was that the reason they push for a 5 day transfer is to pick out the best /strongest embryos. If you only have a couple, there is no point in waiting - your uterus is a better incubator than any lab has!

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
gotcha, that makes total sense.
I only have 8 follies totsl right now, 5 are ready, 3 are a little slower, so they want me to wait one more day to have those guys catch up. From reading other ladies' journals it seems so many of them have had WAY more follies then what I have :( - which means the less chance I have of their actually being good eggs in the 8 that i do have after the ER...I am a nervous nelly with all of this since its my first time, I guess you can call me an IVF virgin .....I dont want to compare myself with anyone but its so hard not too when you read all of this stuff....

I just got out of an IVF class and this is exactly what they said.

you can;t compare yourself to anyone. All you need is one to take.
My sis had 5 follies and ended up with 3 eggs and had 2 put back for a 3day transfer and one took so you never know.

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
You can't compare yourself to others. My first cycle, we got 5 mature eggs and 2 fertilized. My next cycle had 10 mature, 3 fertilized and one took. It only takes one quality egg and your body is doing the best it can. 8 is a great number - stay positive and try to relax - it makes a difference

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
Whoops! I answered the poll wrong, I chose 5 day. I would leave it up to the RE to decide.

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
You just do not know yet. I had 8, 5 fertilized, put 2 back in a 3day transfer. Froze the other 3. They said if I had more then they may have waited for a blast. Good luck!

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
I say do a 5-day transfer if it looks like you have more than 4 or 5 embies that look similar on Day 2 or 3. What may look good on Day 3 may look horrible on Day 5 and you would not know that if you did not push it to day 5. Also...it is good information to know whether or not you can make 5-day blasts. On the other hand, if it is quite obvious on day 3 that there are two or so that stand out from the rest and your RE says that this is what you should do...then do that. It also depends upon your age. If you are say older and have only 5 embies left on Day 3 and you want to put back all 5..why wait until Day 5? Good luck.

Re: 3 day vs. 5 day transfer
Just went through this. My first IVF was w day 5 because I had 13 embies. My recent IVF was a day 3- retrieved 8 eggs, 4 fertilized. All 4 were 8 cell on day 3 so RE wanted to push me to day 5. I asked him to transfer on day 3 bc I did not want to take the risk of waiting. So we transferred 2 on day 3- I believe when you have so few they can only do better in you. there is no benefit to growing them in a lab unless you have a bunch.
I'm glad I did a day 3 bc the other 2 embies did not make it. Day 3 gave me the best chance.
Good luck!
