MILK

One of my friends just found out she is pregnant but doesn't drink milk. My question is.. Is it that important to drink milk? Anyone here not drink milk but drink more of something else? She said she would drink choc. milk but that's not that good for you because of the choc. right?

I agree. I don't like plain milk, but I try to drink as much choc. as I can. My dr. told me that the baby will get the calcium no matter what, but if the mommy is not drinking enough, baby takes it from mommy's bones, which leads to osteoporosis.

Re: MILK

I have began drinking milk every day with dinner (well, unless we go out - then when I get home I have 2 glases...Chat Icon ) - and its a big change from my former diet coke w/ meals....I think chocolate milk would be fine...then again, my best friend has a duaghter who is 9 mos old and perfectly healthy and she never drank a glass of milk her whole pregnancy (she did eat lots of cheese though!) - she should be find either way! Chocolate milk should be fine. She can also get her dairy from cottage cheese and string cheese. Dark leafy vegetables have a lot of calcium, too.

Re: MILK

They make a really yummy fat free Nesquick chocolate milk. It will give her the calcium she needs without adding too much fat. She can also eat cheese, icecream or cottage cheese for extra calcium.

Re: MILK

I do chocolate milk as well....my doctor explained to me that the baby takes what they need first, so if the mom is not getting enough calcium, she may get osteoperosis or tooth decay.....

I haven't been able to tolerate drinking a glass of milk since becoming PG. My Dr. suggested yogurt (yogurt smoothies go down easier), string cheese and OJ with added calcium.

If she can drink chocolate milk, I think that would be better than no milk. I've never heard of chocolate being bad during pregnancy - every book I have says if you want it, have it!

Re: MILK

As long as she's getting calcium, she's fine. Hopefully she's taking prenatal vitamins. WHile pregnant, the fetus takes whatever vitamins it wants from the mother. The mother's body is the one that suffers. Once the baby is out, your body starts to take care of itself. Soda saps your bones of calcium, so she should limit her intake as much as possible.

Unless she wants brittle bones, she should take supplements.

Re: MILK

Actually when my friend first got pregnant, all she would drink is Skim Milk w/ Chocolate powdered mix. And she HATES milk, but did it w/ the chocoloate.

She used to drink 4 glasses every nite, then got rid of the chocolate and drank skim milk w/ ice. She said it was always so refreshing to her.

The chocolate has a lot of caffeine, so if she needs to have chocolate, it should be in moderation.
