Can I refuse an HSG?

If I am not pregnant by Jan my doctor wants to run another HSG before trying any medicated cycles.. I had a blocked tube and surgery this summer.

Is it weird that I DO NOT want an HSG? I am scared it is gonna hurt, I am scared of infection (already had a pelvic infection) and I really don't want to know if my tube is reblocked and I dont want to know if there is scar tissue in my uterus (from removal of uterine septum). I just want the meds and to move on. I feel dumb for thinking this way but I would rather not know if things are bad, it is going to put me back in a bad state of depression…..am I wrong for feeling this way???? Do you think he will let me move on to our next step without the hsg??? UGH. UGH. UGH.

I think that knowing all the facts during IF treatments are crucial....I know you may be scared but for me at least it was not horrible...I had mild cramping so I took a motrin and that helped...if you are concerned about an infection then you can ask your dr. to prescribe antibiotics...I think you should reconsider since if you do have a blocked tube than maybe your IF treatment plan would change.

I agree, if you have blocked tubes basically you're doing an IUI is pointless.

But I understand how you feel there were times when I had to inject myself and just started hysterically crying because I started to feel so violated by all the blood work injections and appts.

i agree with the others. not knowing because you are scared will get you nowhere in this process. it will likely lengthen the amount of time it takes you to conceive. it certainly wont help anything. i know it sucks royally but knowing and treating the problem will most likely get you to your goal faster than not knowing.

Don't put if off. If you have another blockage or scar tissue there is no point in wasting time on meds or anything. If its reblocked at least you know you have the choice of a lap or going straight to ivf. I know you already feel like you wasted time so I wouldnt bother trying meds blindly and wasting more time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Can I refuse an HSG?

I know the Drs I saw wold not go ahead with any treatments without the HSG. The Drs need to have the entire picture of whats going on in order to be able to treat you the correct way.

Out of everything I went through the HSG was not an invasive proceedure and I'm glad I did it to know if I had any issues.

Re: Can I refuse an HSG?

OK girls thank you. You are painting the bigger picture here and you are all right. I think I knew you would say all of this and I needed to hear it. I do need to find out what is going on in there. I think I am just worried that they are going to want to do another lap and I am not doing another lap, I just cant do that again. And I am worried about what they will find in there and the heartache I will feel if something is still wrong after my surgery this summer…but I need to face the facts and keep on going right? Ok thanks this is helpful. Thank you again!

Re: Can I refuse an HSG?

I don't think I would have my Chat Icon Chat Icon if it wasn't for the HSG. They were able to clear a blockage during the process.

It DID hurt for me, but compared to everything that those of us struggling with IF go through to conceive our Chat Icon

From what I've read on here, it seems the HSG is a quick and painless thing for MOST.

I just don't think I could see going through the potential heartbreak of future unsuccessful cycles without dotting all my I's and crossing all my T's ... without going through each and every step of the IF process to know that I've done everything I can at each step before moving on to the next step.

I know how you feel, I was worried about it beforehand ... but I don't think you should skip anything in the process.
