Has anyone applied for section 8 housing?
I need to get this ball rolling for a family member and I know it could take a while. They definitely will meet the income restrictions. Some of the websites are terrible and I can't seem to find out how to apply. btw-it's for senior housing.
TIA!

You have to wait for the lists to be opened, there are years long wait lists. Sometimes if it's an emergency situation they can get on the list. Every town has it's own lists and requirements, I found this for all the agencies on LI. It's antiquated, you have to call each agency. FM mzsocialworker too, she is a social worker on the island and I know she does deal with housing for her clients, she may be able to give you better insight than I can

Gulp-yeah I knew it was long. I think mom and dad applied once when it was open. Do you have to keep applying or does your initial application keep current?

I am a social worker also. You do not have to keep applying, but I have some of my clients who were on the list for at least 6-7 years before they finally got their vouchers. Best thing to do is keep checking to see when they open up a lottery. I have a few clients who received public housing within a year or so, so that might be an option for you also.

If section 8 doesn't work out, what about those senior assistant living community's?

The assisted living/retirement communities are a fortune but they have some units set aside for senior section 8. I guess they need to be put on waiting lists but those can be long too.

My aunt applied for the senior public housing, but you needed to be a resident of that particular town for x number of years (5-10 maybe) before getting on the list. She was on the list for years but wound up buying a low-priced co-op since the list didn't seem promising.

Re: Has anyone applied for section 8 housing?
My coworkers mother in law lives in a senior apartment that is subsidized in some way. It's in ronkonkoma by the Cenacle. Recently a new senior building that looks really nice was built in coram, it's part of the st Francis Cabrini parish. You can probably get info by calling the church. I have a great aunt that is disabled, she lives in a nice mobile home senior community in Riverhead. The units are all new looking, the whole place is Landscaped and clean, has snow removal and other services like a condo. Her sons paid about $15,000 for her unit and she is able to pay all of her monthly bills and has money leftover with her SS. Good luck!
