DH and I are also looking for houses in Nassau. I'm a little OCD so I've done plenty of research about school districts and here are the rankings (the #'s are country rankings). I'll stay around your price range.
#53 - Rockville Centre #151 - Garden City #216 - Herricks (NHP) #299 - Valley Stream South #383/#431/#667 - Bellmore Merrick s.d. #405 - Floral Park Memorial (Sewanahaka School District) #424 - Valley Stream North #543 - Oceanside #586 - Lynbrook #6583 - New Hyde Park Memorial (Sewanahaka School District) #742 - Valley Stream Central #812 - Carle Place #830 - McArthur (Levittown) #837 - Baldwin #936 - Clarke (Westbury) #1112 - WAlt Whitman (huntington) #1330 - Plainedge (N. Massapequa) #1410 - Division (Levittown)
These are from Newsweek magazine 2010
List is useless and a bit absurd considering its voluntary and hand picked..Not only is it missing a ton of schools (Wantagh, Wheatley, Jericho?). but the list seems to be based on "how hard they challenge students / AP courses". You have to push Newsweek to include your school otherwise they won't be on it. Regardless, it's pretty much worthless.

Re: nassau school districts
Everyone loves recommending their town.
I'll jump on the bandwagon and say Wantagh is great.
I don't have kids in school yet, so I haven't used the system, but it is well regarded. I find I liked it better than some of the surrounding areas.
I'm in the Forest Lake section. Also Wantagh Woods is nice.
I think in my town around 500K works decently, you're not fighting to find the cheapest house in the neighborhood, that doesn't seem to be a good fit, but you're not at the top end of the area either.

I wouldn't consider this list useless. Although I think ONLY basing it on AP scores is automatically going to scew the results, I also think that if the schools don't have a lot of AP classes then is there a real need for them?
FYI - Jericho #34, and Wheatley is #155 but I wanted to stay around her budget.
Are there a few schools that are ranked wrong or left off... sure. But at least thigs gives you a general idea.

Re: nassau school districts
We live in North Merrick and love it. Close to the Southern State, Meadowbroook, LIRR. Where we are we're still able to walk to stores. The neighborhood is great, people are very down to earth and very friendly.
I have three kids in the schools and they are excellent. All of the teachers are so nice, they offer lots of clubs and extracurriculars even at the elementary level. My daughters are in drama and art club, zumba, etc. (these are all free or cost less than $5 btw). My son needs extra help with speech, resource room etc. and they are really on top of addressing his issues and helping him one on one. I am very satisfied with the school overall.

The list is based on the # of AP classes that are offered. It's automatically skewed towards larger, wealthier districts. An SD like Port Jefferson gets overlooked. With a senior class of 90 kids, they can't have the same number of AP classes that bigger districts can.
To the OP: take all rankings with a grain of salt. Most districts on LI are solid. Think about what you're looking for in a town and a school district. Do you want a large school with lots of course offerings, or a small district with more personalized attention? Do you need special education or gifted and talented programs? ESL services? Town and school athletics?
I liked the south-central Nassau towns: Levittown, East Meadow, Bethpage, Wantagh, Bellmore, N. Merrick. That was due to our price range and commutes to work.

honestly, I would go with Wantagh. We wanted Wantagh but didnt find a house we loved.
Wantagh has one of the best school systems in Nassau. Its very conveniently located. LOVE the area.
No offense to anyone, but wantagh school district is definitely NOT one of the best in nasssau county..in my opinion it is a middle, if not lower middle of the road school school district, in relation to other districts in Nassau County....again, jmho...

Re: nassau school districts
The bottom line is that identifying "good" or "the best" school districts is an impossible task, because it's very subjective. When posters ask for (and offer) opinions on school district, we should keep in mind that everyone has a different perspective and a different set of criteria. Everyone can debate over what they think is good or middle of the road or not good, but what is "good" to one person may not be "good" to someone else.
As a home buyer, you have to ask yourself what YOU want or need in a school district. Someone who has a child with special needs is going to judge a school district differently than someone who thinks their child could get an athletic scholarship to college and wants a serious sports program. Someone who works full time may care about full-day v. half-day kindergarten, pre-K programs, transportion, and aftercare. Someone else may focus on arts and music programs.
Even if the focus is strictly on academics, how are you judging what's good? Is it based on the % of kids who go onto college? How many get a regents diploma? How many AP classes are offered? Standardized test results? Student-teacher ratio? Money spent per student? The criteria is endless.
So I agree that rankings should be taken with a grain of salt. Any home buyers should do their research (based on fact, and reputation, if that matters) on the school district and decide if that district offers what they and their family are looking for.
