Buying a used dryer?

Do you think it's ok to buy a used dryer off of craigslist or do you think it's nasty because you never know how clean the people are?

We STILL need a dryer but can't afford to buy a new set right now. Not until Jan/Feb. Should we buy a used one now just to get by until we buy a set or go ahead and buy a new single one now? We will need a washer at some point since that has already been repaired one time and is as old as the dryer is.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

You can buy a basic dryer on sale for about$250 at most stores. I would check out the upcoming sales. You should be able to find a really inexpensive one. I wouldn't buy a used one.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

I've been checking and the cheapest one I'm seeing is $350.00. And that's not with a warranty or tax. I just thought we'd get a better deal buying a set in a few months rather than one now.

Can I ask why you wouldn't buy a used one?

Is a used dryer something I have to worry about for bedbugs and other things from other people? Or is it just that you never know what you're getting? Thanks again!

Re: Buying a used dryer?

In your case, I would buy the cheapest dryer I could and not the used one.

I would be worried about the cleanliness of other people, yes.

You wouldn't be getting a warranty from the used dryer on craigslist anyway. So I'd rather put $350 towards something new, than put let's say $200 towards something used that breaks down and I wind up having to spend another $350 on new anyway.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

For something like a dryer that is shoved in the basement, I would check out the models with dings and scratches. I know up here the Sears has whole stores dedicated to those types of appliances. You can get an awesome deal!

I wouldn't spend $200 on Craiglist when for like $100 more you will get new with a warranty.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

There are stores that sell re-conditioned appliances. We bought a dryer for $150 that lasted at least 5 years. Since we bought it from a store that fixed it up I'm going to go tell myself that they cleaned it, too.

There's one in East Islip and one in Copaigue, both right off of Sunrise.

try the habitat store...they often have excess appliances from donations that they sell to help fund habitat projects....they have all sorts of appliances, furniture, cabinets etc. Most of their products are new, but they also sell recycled furniture.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

Just bought one tonight. On clearance at Home Depot. Floor model. Originally $649. Got it for $324. It's 7.0 cu. ft. it's new, just a show model. Perfect condition. 1year warranty (we skipped the extended service plan).

We have thoughts of moving in 2-3 years, so I didn't want to get a super expensive one and not take it. I just needed something to work in the mean time.

I wouldn't jus because there is little to no recourse if it doesn't work. IMO a dryer is something cheap enough to buy new...

As a side note - what's the concern about cleanliness? Usually it's freshly washed clothes that go in the dryerChat Icon

I agree--and if you buy a house with a W/D in the basement, I think most people use them, right?

I just wouldn't buy used b/c if it breaks down in 2 weeks you're out that money and still have no dryer!

Can you suffer without until Black Friday? When we bought ours they were almost 1/2 off on Black Friday at PC Richards and we opened a PC card and didnt have to pay for 6 months.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

I would be more worried about buying a lemon that'll conk out in a few months rather than cleanliness..

Are there any scratch and dent stores down there?

Re: Buying a used dryer?

i actually got a free washer/dryer from someone on here just had to pick it up when we purchased the house. Its been working for two years fine but i am about to call to see who can come to the house and clean it out (blown out) and if you buy it used then I definitely would do this since lint can catch fire.

As far as prices - dent models are usually $200-$300 that is new just dented. If its $100 and ask to turn it on or have it running I would risk the money to see if it happens. If you go to the house and it looks filthy then you don't have to buy just say you changed your mind that is it.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

Thank you everyone!

I would LOVE to buy a scratch and dent one but I can't find any? Chat Icon There's a Sears outlet store and the cheapest one they have is in the $400 range. How is that cheaper? It's only marked down $70.00 from it's normal selling price. I'm in NC so my choices are probably more limited than up on LI. We only have Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, HHGregg, Sears and that's about it. We also don't want to get a no name brand because those are iffy too.

Re: Buying a used dryer?

You sound like you're facing the same predicament as someone who is going to have her/his laundry room remodeled and won't have access for about 2 months or so.

I'll be in that situation soon and my plan is to drive to the laundromat or my nearby in-laws every other week to use their laundry machine.

If you must have it now, just finance a good one and pay it off gradually. Sears and many appliance store will gladly help you through the process.

ETA: I find nothing wrong with buying a used dryer but agree with the others that you can buy a new one so cheaply that it's not worth the hassle of buying then trying to sell it again or get rid of it in a few months...

I honestly see nothing wrong with buying a used dyer (as long as the price is right) until you can afford a new set.

Yes, I would buy a used one!

I sold my old washer/dryer set on craigslist when I got new ones.

There was nothing wrong with them.

PC Richards had tons of scratch & dent dryers in deer park. Not sure if they would ship to NC ?

She is in NC. Definitely check out Habitat. We bought a dryer there for $50, it lasted over 2 years and then we sold it for $100! There is one in Durham and also I think they just opened oen in Cary

I see nothing dirty about buying a used dryer as others said. If you are that concerned that a cloth with bleach and wipe it out then rinse with a clean cloth
