oil burner - very noticeable odor - advice?

I'm completely new to the world of oil heat. Our oil tank is outside of the house, above the ground and our oil burner is only a few years old.

Since turning on the heat last week, I am smelling a very, very strong oil smell in the basement.

Is this typical or should I have our oil company come in and examine the system?

(We had our annual tune up about a month ago and they said everything was ok and in working order.)

Please let me know. TIA Chat Icon

I had something similar and I believe one of my filters had to be replaced (right around the same time I had my tune up so it worked out)

IF you're smelling something, I would DEFINITELY get someone down there ASAP. Its probably just a filter issue like the PP said, but oil has pretty noxious fumes and you don't want to chance it that you could get sick from it or that there could potentially be a fire hazard inside your home

Yikes!!! You're right though, DH and I couldn't even sit down there to watch tv as the smell was making it hard to breathe...I'm making the appointment on my lunch break! Hope its just a filter! Thanks!
