Update....Need advice from the experts!!!

Update: Thanks for all the help. I gave myself my first shot last night before leaving the hospital. The nurse was there with me and she said I did a great job and I was surprised that I could actually do it.

I came to you girls because I know you are all experts.

I am being put on Lovenox due to the fact I ended up with 3 clots in my leg at 29 weeks.

I will be giving myself the injections and am a bit scared and just wanted to know if there was any advice to make it easier.

TIA

Re: Need advice from the experts!!!

A lot of girls day it burns but I haven't had that issue. The first week the bruising was unreal but it has gotten better. I guess I am just sooooo used to needles by now. Gl!

Re: Need advice from the experts!!!

this is how i did it -

apply ice directly to the area for about 5 minutes before the injections
squeeze a small patch of skin (some people say this increases bruising but it wasnt the case for me personally)
inject at a 45 degree angle
inject as sloooooooooooow as humanly possible. this will reduce bruising and burning. i used to literally tap the plunger really lightly little by little.
do not touch the area for a little while after the inject.

i found it was harder to do it pregnant because there were less available spots to inject into. i ended up migrating towards my hips although at the beginning, before i was preg, i would inject an inch or so below and to the left of my belly button. either way a good bloated spot tends to bruise less than a spot that is more skin. but its hard to avoid the bruising for the most part. mine would bruise without rhyme or reason. good luck!!

This is exactly what I do, but I don't ice it. I would try what you feel comfortable with... If you're using it twice a day and need to use it exactly 12hrs apart, you may not always have ice available.

Good luck!!!

Re: Need advice from the experts!!!

Thanks all. I had the first one in the hospital today and it wasnt bad and they are making me do the one tonight before I can be discharged.

I wll be on house arrest so I figure I should always have ice. But was fine without it today.

Good luck!! I always found the anticipation was the worst before these things.. Once you get the hang of it, it will just become routine! Chat Icon

I was on a Heparin drip for Sat Sun and Monday and then they took me off that and put me on the shots of Lovenox starting today at 7am. Once I get my 2nd shot at 7 pm I get to go home.

Re: Need advice from the experts!!!

I've tried everything under the sun to try and prevent stinging, bruising, everything. At this point, I just pinch and put it in Chat Icon Then I hop in the shower so I don't concentrate on the stinging. I've even given myself the shot while talking on the phone so I can't whine!
Everyone is different so try the different suggestions and see what works best for you. Last, I was pinching and injecting on a 45 degree angle. That wasn't so bad and had minimal bruising. Daisy shared a tip to pinch and inject outside the pinch. I'd try that one since she just gets the little dots :)

Good luck and happy that you're ok.
