Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

Dh and I saw one house we liked with no basement or attic..I'm not too crazy about that. I really would prefer a basement to keep junk. The house had a 1.5 garage so my husband thinks that would suffice but I don't see how. I doubt we are buying that house because the price was high but we are seeing quite a few houses with no basements because we are looking at the south shore.

So for those who have no basement, where do you keep:

Clothing bins (for winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter)
Holiday decorations
Suitcases
Photo albums
Anything else

TIA!

To be honest, although we have an attic (which is the length of the house) it's hard to get stuff up there so I 100% REGRET buying a house with NO basement. My living space is great BUT the storage space is a problem. We only have a 1 car garage and let me tell you, with all the holiday stuff, tools, and baby stuff we're saving it fills up FAST. Personally, if in the future we're in the market for a new house it absolutely HAS to have a basement. I am overrun and I'm not even a big saver of things or a collector. It's hard. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

We don't have a basement, and it is one of the things I wanted. We don't have enough storage space at all. We have an attic, but don't store anything up there bc it is a pain to get up there.

In the future we plan on building onto our house, building a storage room, and better access to the attic.

Right now we have storage bins in our garage, x-mas decorations, tools, pictures are in my closet, and the kids closets have storage bins with their old clothing.

While I would love to have storage right now, it does keep us from hoarding stuff we don't need. We think twice before buying.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

We store pretty much everything in the garage - suitcases, clothing bins, holiday decorations, sporting equipment, lawn care supplies, boxes of stuff we never unpacked after moving in. Just not photos, because I wouldn't trust them with exposure to heat and cold, so they're in the guest room. You could make a 1 1/2 garage work, especially if you put in a shelving system or bins to get things organized... it's doable, and definitely forces you not to hang on to a bunch of junk for no reason, but it's still not the same.

I have no basement and not much of an attic (ductwork for the CAC pretty much takes up the whole thing). I never even thought about it being an issue when we bought the house, but living there for a few years now, I really wish we had more storage space.

Unless you are looking strictly south of Merrick Rd. or in Levittown, you should have no trouble finding a home with a basement, if you want one. I live and do the majority of my real estate work on the south shore -- most of my customers want homes with basements and find them.

The hi-ranch style of house typically does not have a basement (there are rare exceptions). And houses down by the water usually have crawl space. But the other south shore towns by me -- Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, etc. -- have tons of homes at all price points with basements.

If you are thinking at all of resale value, a basement is a great thing to have (finished or not).

If not, it's just a personal preference. I have a split with a finished basement. I like that the utilities and washer/dryer are down there, out of the way. I use it for storage, but also as a playroom for my son. So it has a lot of functionality for me beyond storage. It's like another room int he house. But I know others who never use their basement.

We have a basement and definitely need it! As for the attic, we have vaulted ceilings and inaccessible attic space. This has been a pain when looking to do any electric work (high hats, adding switches, etc.). Just something I never thought of before I owned a house...

Our basement is only the size of the living room above it. That is fine with me. We don't use the attic.

no basement or attic but we have a huge shed and a 1.5 car garage. we can fit everythign in the garage.

next house I want a basement, but more for playroom space then storage space.

I find I am less of a hoarder when I have less spaceChat Icon

Agreed

You need ATLEAST an attic or a basement.
I wouldnt buy a house without either.

Now that I have kids, I wish I had a basement for storage/playroom.

We have no basement and we never use our attic lol. We do have a shed attached to our house and one on our property. Go for it. Lots of places for storage = clutter IMHO.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

We do not have a basement but do have attic space.

We have some stuff in the garage (camping and snow gear) Then Christmas decorations are in the attic and thats it.

I do not do the change the clothes for the season....If I don;t have room for them I do not need them so it keeps me from buying too much stuff. We also have a shed but that is really just used for lawn stuff.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

We have a Levitt house so no basement or attic. Luckily we have a 1.5 car garage (holiday stuff is stored there, as well other random items!). We also use our "office" was a mini walk in closet- I store photo albums, etc. in there. Suitcases are in our front closet and one of the bedroom closets (for now). We have a bunch of closets so that helps!

Same here. It works fine for us. We actually can't collect cr@p so we purge often. My DH made a storage section for me in our 2.5 car garage. All of my holiday stuff gets stored there. The house had so many things we loved that we couldn't pass it up.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

we do not have a basement and all though we do have an attic it does not have any room for storage. thankfully our house has a lot of very big closets, we have a 1 car garage, and a shed. it is tight for storing our junk but it works for now.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

Our house doesn't have a basement, but I have a 2.5 car garage and an attic. I'd definitely look for a house with more storage - it's amazing how much cr@p you collect over the years.

Re: Anyone have a house w/o a basement or an attic?

We have an attic a full and then a smaller one, a basement and a 1 car garage! No way no how could I live with out one or the other. I agree with Christine though a basement has better resale value.
