BTDT: Do I NEED a high chair?

looking for opinions on high chairs and if they're necessary or not...

lots of people are telling me that for the first while I'll be feeding LO either in my arms, or then in the little swing type seats, and not even need the highchair, and then when they are big enough for a high chair, one of the portable ones that attach to the table is more than sufficient...

is this what you've found? Or did you find the highchair is necessary for certain reasons?

My DS is 4 months and i JUST took the high chair out. i fed him mostly in my arms at first. lately i prop him in his boppy to feed or in his bouncy chair or rock and play.
we were just able to start cereal so i think im going to use the chair now to make less mess.

i have an apartment so i bought the fisher price space saver which attaches to a chair. ive used it once and like it so far.

I bought the Chicco highchair for her as an Easter gift. She was 4 months old. I didn't use it until 6 months and I like it. I also have a pub style table in my kitchen that is a 2 seater so for us we needed a highchair. We're now pg w/#2 and our big Chritsmas gift is a proper kitchen table so we'll be buying her a fisher price space saver seat/booster seat so he can use the high chaor when ready.

I think it's up to you. We got a great deal on our highchair and I love it, but had I already had a real kitchen table I would have done the space saver.

The high chair was a lifesaver for me while I cooked dinner each night- my DD would sit and I'd give her puffs to munch on.

Now, at 2, she uses the fisher price booster seat.

I got one, but my MIL kept it at her house. It took up too much room in my apartment at the time. I don't really see a big need for one. I used the bumpo chair when DS just started eating solids, and then at about 5-6 months, I just used my fisher price healthy care booster.
If I was to register now, I possibly would ask for a Fisher price space saver seat.

Highchair is a must IMO. I started putting dd in at 4 months, I have a chicco and has a great recline. I feed her every meal in there and she is almost 14 months. Its great to put them in while you are cooking, and cleaning up. Plus it free's up chair space for when you have company over. I have a lot of company over pretty much every week so I prefer a separate highchair than one that attaches to the kitchen chair.

I only used my high chair until DS was 13 months. Then he did not want to feel constricted and we switch to a booster with a tray and he loved it.

I sold the high chair

Next time around, I will not buy a high chair. I will get a FP space saver high chair that I will use with our own chair.

The only thing I will miss is the toy though. I loved his FP high chair and the toy on the tray that came with it.

DO NOT get a regular high chair. I think they are a huge waste of space-- and this product, which I have is essentially the same thing, but it straps to a chair that's already there- so you take up less space in general.

I used it exactly the same as I would a highchair, but didn't have an extra cumbersome thing around the house.

I really don't know why anyone would get a regular high chair. Just my own opinion of course.

i started putting my DD in her highchair at 2 months because she loved sitting at our level and watching us in the kitchen. she loves sitting in it. i still feed her bottles in my arms but when we start solids i will be using the highchair.

We love ours! We started using it as soon as he started solids (6 months) and JUST stopped using it recently (like last week) and he's almost 2.

My DD is 2 and we'e used our high chair 2 times. Instead I have a seat that attaches to the table. It such a space saver and I like that she was eating right there with us...she's too big for it now. We used tom take it to restaurants too.

There are all kinds of things that a baby doesn't really need... but you absolutely need some kind of high chair. Trying to feed a squirmy baby while you or your DH holds them $ucks. You want the baby to be upright while they eat or they can choke, so a swing or bouncer won't work. Once they're old enough to feed themselves, you can have the baby sit in their high chair with some Puffs or another snack while you load a dishwasher or sip some coffee.

eta: I have the Fisher Price Space Saver and like it. It straps to a kitchen chair so it doesn't take up extra floor space. You can change the positions and it adjusts from an infant seat to a high chair to a booster. It's really easy to clean - toss everything into the washing machine and it looks new. And it's about $50 at BRU. Score!

I could not live without it! DS climbs out of EVERYTHING!!!!! This is the only thing I can feed him in and he stays put.

I didn't start using a high chair until they started eating solids. The space saver ones are perfectly fine to use instead of a conventional high chair. Plus the space saver can be used as a booster later on.

You need SOME type of high chair - I have the space saver one.

I started using it at 3 months -- reclined. DD would sit with us at dinner and she LOVED it.

At 6 months, I used it for feeding solids. IMO it is a choking hazard to start solids in anything but non reclined fully sitting up position -- those swings are way too reclined

Now, I still use it for three meals a day. . . for watching TV so I can take a nice long shower LOL

And it can be used as a booster seat next!
