Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
Ummm, call me naive, but why in the world would there be any more prestige attached to home ownership on LI as opposed to somewhere else?

I think that the thought would be that it is more expensive on LI - therefore making it more prestigious.
My thoughts are that there are some very prestigious areas on LI, and some that are not so prestigious. I think that home ownership, while an accomplishment, is not in and of itself prestigious no matter where you are.
Don't get me wrong - I think its something to be very proud of - but so was graduating college and i dont think that makes it prestigious anymore.....
In this country I think that people treat home-ownership as a right more than an accomplishment these days. And I dont think that the prices all over Long Island make the entire area qualify as prestigious.

i agree, very well put. This is what I was trying to say, but the words never came across my PC I also agree that prestige is in a whole other leauge. If you are wealthy in $$$$, that is my definition. To others it doesn't mean that so I respect that, however do not agree.
Graduating college-getting dregrees, owning a home, building a business are all accomplishments, pride and choices. Prestigue comes with your hard work when you can show what your done with your accomplishments.
we've all accomplished and have a level of pride, comfort, prestige in our own words, but do they fall under the millionare club of prestige, no....
**again, just my personal opinion.
edited to correct my horrid spelling

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
Well, this is my thought on the issue - do I think there is prestige attached to home ownership on LI? It depends. If I know someone my age who owns a beautiful home in the Hamptons, in Great Neck, etc... yes, I'm fairly impressed, just as I would be impressed by my friends in Philly who own beautiful homes in downtown philly or on the main line, which are comparable neighborhoods.
Do I think it's prestigious when someone purchases a home that's smaller than mine for double the price? No, I don't think that's "prestigious" per se. Prestige attaches only when, in my mind, we're talking about certain neighborhoods, or certain houses, not just a run-of-the-mill house on LI, just as I would never expect anyone to look at my run-of-the-mill house in a suburb of Philadelphia and think of it as prestigious. But just because it is a home on LI doesn't, in and of itself, make it anymore prestigious in my mind, but that's my perspective.

of course. its alot harder to do here than other places in the country.
If FH and I moved to the south - i wouldnt have to work and we could buy a huge brand new house.
This is what I keep telling DH, but he is determined to keep me on LI forever.

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
I don't personally think so - but it's a matter of opinion. A lot of people stay on Long Island or come to Long Island to be near or closer to family. I know a lot of people who moved away because they didn't want to make all the sacrifices most people have to make to afford to live here. I would love to stay on Long Island to be near my family & friends...but the home we're buying in Monroe, NY is 3 times the size of most of the houses we can afford here. Plus the areas of Long Island I want to be are way too $$$ for what I would want.

I am very proud of DH and I for being able to successfully scrimp and save and make enough money to have a down payment for a house and to not be totally drowning in debt from the mortgage.

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige
depends on the area or town.
certain area are affluent and or have great schools or expensive shopping and nice restaurants. those are the areas i consider prestiguous.
i also consider parts of CT prestiguous, but my specific town is not 100% affluent, per se, however my county is Lower Fairfield County and that is more of a status area than other parts of CT

I agree with this 100%. I live in NJ and feel the same way. People joke around saying that where I live used to be known as Millionaire's Avenue. Millionaire's we are not, but alot of people in this neighborhood are here for the "status" of it. Us... well, we just fell in love with our house, period. We had no idea until we moved here and told everyone where we lived did we start hearing those comments about the neighborhood and the status area that it is.

Absolutely NOT! I can't find anything prestigious about an old house that's extremely overpriced and having to plunk all my life savings into it to buy it and then living to repair it little by little to make it livable. Or spending an exorbitant amount of money on one that's in living condition already because well, it's in living condition.
Buying a house anywhere it's a huge accomplishment. No matter where, even in North Dakota, it's something not everyone can experience in a lifetime - that pride fill everyone no matter where they buy.
I think the "prestige" thing is something people tell themselves to justify buying in the market right now. Because I guarantee you that those who bought in a normal market (like my SIL's mom who bought her Westbury cape for $135K in 1997 & just had it appraised for over $500K) weren't thinking of "prestige" they merely wanted a place to live. And the prices then were more on par with the rest of the country...it wasn't what it is now.
It's not "defeat" when someone decides to move elsewhere that's cheaper if that decision comes with better odds and a much better quality of life. I for one won't work to pay my mortgage and taxes. It's simply a realization that you can't "play" in the current market and won't. Even if it does go to normal standards (which it must since every expert is predicting so) the houses are still unbelievably over priced for their condition.
Prestigious to me is Southampton, a mansion (a true one, not a "McMansion someone built on a "large" lot next to a bunch of crappy homes), a gated community, private lake front property, an estate, etc. An old house in need of serious repair and updating is not it - doesn't matter where. No matter how much I have to sacrifice to get it. The latter is just what has to be done in order to stay in that market. That alone doesn't make it prestigious, regardless of what homeowners/house hunters tell themselves. JMHO.
I agree--Prestige to me has nothing to do with where you are living. I believe it is what you do to achieve what you have that makes it prestigious.
