Baiting Hollow, Palmer, Roanoke, and Martha Clara are all before or in Riverhead on Sound Ave. The bulk of the wineries are east of that.

I've been to Roanoke and Martha Clara, and live on the North Fork. Pretty much all wineries charge for tastings, but you get a good sample of a variety of wines. This time of year they are pretty busy due to harvest time.

Baiting Hollow was a zoo. Their thing is that they rescue horses and they sell wines and artwork to support them. You can also take horse tours and pony rides. I don't know if it was just the day I went, but it was a ZOO. You bought drink tickets and the more you bought the less it cost. The main bar is crowded but we found a smaller table doing the tastings. I don't think we bought any wine there.

Roanoke was really nice. It's very small, a nice rustic tasting room in, kind of a barn. They explained the wines to us, and gave us cheese and crackers. More like what I expected from a wine tasting. I think it was $7 pp. They had a red flight, a white flight and a mixed flight if I am recalling correctly. The wines were good there. A lot of cab franc which some of us didn't like, but they had a good rose.

Palmer was also a zoo. On that particular day they had live music and people were camped out there with picnics, etc. We went to the bar. They didn't explain the wines to us, just plunked them down on the bar. Don't remember the cost and we didn't end up buying any wine.

Martha Clara was literally a zoo in that they have alll kinfd of animals there and a lot of space for kids to run and play. They have a great gift shop anda HUGE tasting bar. They didn't really spend a lot of time explaining the wines and their one award winning wine was not available for tasting, nor by the glass, only by the bottle. We're not riesling fans, so we passed.

These were all on sound Ave. After that we switched to Main St and my favorite winery in terms of wine/atmosphere and experience, especially in terms of getting knowledge about the wines (I like it when they stop and explain the wines to you), was at Pellegrini.
