Re: Virginia - affordable NICE places to live?
My friend lives in a town called Gum Spring. It's outside of Richmond.
She built this huge, beautiful mansion-type house for around $300K on a ton of land in the woods.
I think the drive to Richmond where most professionals work is about 30-40 minutes.
I also don't think they pay much in taxes at all. Maybe around 1K a year if that?
I don't know how the school or hospital systems are though.
She moved down there because she worked for a huge NYC company that transferred to Richmond.

I really only know Northern VA, which is so congested and not affordable. I'd look into Charlotesville and Richmond.

My sister lives in Charolettesville. It's a quaint town. Univ of VA is the major employer down there.

The Roanoke area is nice and affordable.
It all depends on what you are looking for though?
Roanoke is in Southwestern VA and is the second largest city (Richmond is the first).

My cousins relocated to Virginia a few years back. They live in Mechanicsville, which I think is in Hanover County. The schools are good, and I don't think they're all that far from the Richmond area.

Re: Virginia - affordable NICE places to live?
I live in Chesapeake VA & like everywhere else there are nice areas & not so nice areas. It depends on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. Personally I dont really like it here but its because there isnt alot of the things I like to do available here. I would rather live closer to a city. We live about 30-40 mins from Virginia Beach. FM me if you would like some more info. Good Luck in your search.
ETA - we live 30-40 mins from the ocean front. Cheasapeake & Virginia Beach border each other.
