Steams in the bag?

What do you think of the frozen veg that steams in its own bag in the microwave? I've been thinking about the safety of them and the microwave post (I have one!) brings me to ask. I've used them before-thoughts?

Re: Steams in the bag?

I try to use the microwave as little as possible...and the idea of nukeing veggies in a plastic bag just doesn't sit well with me. Especially because the veggies are prepared specifically for microwave use..just seems a little un-natural to me.Chat Icon

I'm sure it's very convienent though!

We wouldn't steam them in the bag (I say we because I'm not the one that cooks in my houseChat Icon).

Re: Steams in the bag?

Heating veggies in a plastic bag (or anything in a plastic bag or plastic container) will cause the chemicals in the plastic to leech into your food. I doubt those bags are BPA free, and even if they are there are tons of other chemicals you should be worrying about. I very rarely use my microwave at all, but if I do I only heat things up in glass.

Re: Steams in the bag?

honestly?

meh

I used them to puree a few times for my daughter. She's still alive and kicking and shows no ill effects. On the rare occasion we may even use it to make just HER veggies because she wants green beans and I won't eat them so she'll share a serving with her dad.

I think once or twice isn't going to be the death of us. Everything around is going to kill us with enough exposure.

Moderation.

I use my microwave for rewarming foods. Hubby uses it for lunches. Meh *shrug*

Then again, I also buy things that say made in china (the horror), re-use a water bottle from time to time and use sweet n low too. Ha!

Re: Steams in the bag?

I take the veggies out of the plastic bag (even though it says not to) before microwaving, and I put it in a glass bowl. I agree it just doesn't seem safe to heat it up in those bags.

I only buy when they are on sale, and unless I'm in a rush I usually take them out and steam them on the stovetop

We eat them and they're fine. They're very convenient when you don't have a lot of time to prepare stuff.

I wouldn't waste your money on the steam ones if you are going to take them out of the bag. Just buy regular frozen.

Honestly- i never ever thought of it- and my Dh eats those all the time.
I don't eat veggies at all- so not sure which is the lesser of those 2 evils!
