found lots of mold in the basement...need help, recs?!?!
We have had some water leak in our basement whenever we get a lot of rain..and Hurricane Irene def didnt help..
Well we went down today to start to look at all our baby stuff for #3 on the way this winter and we noticed mold was on everything - swing, car seat, bassinet, boucer, toys, our luggage..etc
weird thing it isnt even near where the leak was!
My DH took everything he could outside and took all the material off and we plan on washing it...but what do you suggest with what?
If anyone has dealt with this on personal items (fabric, plastic, wood, etc)...what did you do...
do you take care of it youerself...
I dont even know if there is someone you should call!
Please help..and I pray the ans isnt to throw all the stuff out...it is A LOT!
Thanks!

I would see if you can bleach it but honestly I would discard it. I am so incredibly sorry. I can't see using moldy stuff with a new baby.

You can try vinegar if you are looking to use something natural. I'd probably get rid of most fabrics though.

Re: found lots of mold in the basement...need help, recs?!?!
it really depends on what kind of mold you had....black mold is nothing to play around with and depending on how much stuff was damaged by it you may want to have a professional to address.
Greenish mol d isn't as bad, but mold is mold none the less.
The only way to really treat it is with super hot water and generally bleach) I am not sure if bleach for colored clothes works as well as straight up bleach, but I would be nervous since it is for your baby.
Newborns don't have an immune system and are much more susceptible to develop allergies.
The items affected by the mold may be covered by your homeowners/renters insurance.
Good luck to you!

I would use viniger or bleach on any hard surface and any soft surface I would toss.
Also you need to dry out the basement. Since the mold was on things outside of the leak area it means you have a ton of moisture in your basement.

I've never heard of vinegar as a treatment for mold. The only thing I can think of is doing a combination of ammonia treatments (use a spray bottle and spray it onto the affected area), wait until it DRIES COMPLETELY and then spray on bleach on the plastics and other surfaces
*****YOU HAVE TO DO THESE TREATMENTS SEVERAL DAYS APART OTHERWISE YOU WILL CREATE CHLORINE GAS!!!!*****
The fabrics if you can wash in VERY hot water and bleach they should be ok, but I kind of agree with the PP- i would be cautious what fabric you salvage for a new baby. Their immune systems can't handle what we can yet.

yeah...we have a de-humidifier on running 24/7
My DH thinks it wasnt working anymore so he went out and got another one! Hopefully we will see a diff!
We threw out A LOT... washed fabrics that we could in very hot water and used detergent and BORAX.. apparenty that works even better than bleach according to things we read...
and my DH is outside as I type this using borax and/or bleach on any hard surface/plastics!
I also plan on running what I can through the dishwasher on a very hot cycle! (ie little plastic pieces)
SO very frustrating - esp since I feel helpless being pregnant and was advised to stay away obviously!
But I already think it is too late...I think I am having an allergy reaction too it... SO now I am REALLY staying away..
Just not what I or my DH wanted to be doing on this gorgeous day!
