is it necessary to see a Dr. before TTC?

When I went for my last annual check up with my OB/GYN, I mentioned we were thinking of TTC soon. My dr. told me that before we do, I should make an appointment to see her. Chat Icon Wouldn't I wait until after we conceive or at least wait a couple of months after we start TTC and go in if we can't get pregnant? I'm just curious. I really want to try to keep our TTC "journey" as simple and relaxed as possible. I'm afraid that if I start out by going to the dr. she's going to get me all worked up with charts and tests. I kinda just want to wait and see if we can do this on our own. Am I being silly?

Re: is it necessary to see a Dr. before TTC?

The last time I went to the OBGYN I told him we were thinking of TTC soon and I was concerned I had PCOS. He sent me for a sono and I had no cysts, so he said to go for it...from what he can tell I shouldn't have issues. He didn't tell me come back when we officially start trying....so if you don't have any concerns for your fertility at this point I would just "go for it"!

I'm not TTC YET; but went for my annual appt @ the beginning of AUgust. I told my doctor that we want to start TTC in the next 3 months and that i was going to go off my BCP soom. She just told me to start taking a multivitamin. I don't have any major health issues; so that was the only direction she gave me. She said i could get pregnant going right off the pill; but i could stop 2-3 months before i'm ready to let my body start to regulate.

I mentioned to by GYN that we were planning on starting in the spring, and he just gave me a prenatal to start on in case we changed our minds and decided to start sooner. We just discussed when I should come off the pill (I've had issues in the past coming off it), and that was about it. He said no need to come back beforehand, just if there's an issue with getting my period after being off the pill 3+ months.

I went for my annual back in May. I mentioned that next time I saw her we'd probably be discussing babies and all she told me was to make sure I'm taking a multi-vitamin. She didn't say anything about coming back before hand.

Re: is it necessary to see a Dr. before TTC?

I went to my GYN 2 weeks ago. She was pressuring me like a Mother to start trying. I told her we weren't ready (although I like to lurk on the TTC page).

Anywho, she took my blood to check for any thyroid issues and a few other genetic tests and told me that when and if we TTC all this other stuff is out of the way and it will one less concern. One of the genetic tests were to see if I was a Cystic Fibrosis carrier because if I was, than DH would need to get tested and she said why stress over that while you are pregnant... My GYM is like the Dr. House of the box and extremely thorough, but to be honest, I don't know if I will ever be ready so at least she got her dollars worth at my last annual checkup....

We aren't ready, nor trying, but she did a full pre-TTC work up and even prescribed me pre-natals. The script is in my car. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ok, so I'll definitely make sure to take my multi-vitamins...I've always bought them, but usually forget to take them Chat Icon Chat Icon But I figure now that I won't be taking BCPs daily, I can focus on remembering my vitamins! Are regular vitamins ok, or do I need a prescription for prenatals? I take Alive multivitamins now.

I think regular are good until you actually conceive. Mine wrote me the script partially because with my insurance, it winds up cheaper than the multis lol

Re: is it necessary to see a Dr. before TTC?

Doctors take into account, age, health, past medical history, if you have been on BCP for awhile, etc. It is just precautionary. My OBGYN told me to start taking a prenatal, just to have my body prepped when the day comes. If we didn't get pregnant after the 1st year, then she told me to come back to her and we would start other treatments. Good luck! Chat Icon

ETA: I am taking the Womens One A Day prenatal. The prescription prenatals made me sick.

When I told my doctor at my last visit that we'd be TTC soon, she told me to be on prenatals for at least 3 months prior.

I've never had an abnormal checkup...so I'm probably not going for my annual this year until we GET pregnant...lol
