Straight to IVF?

so i went to my first RE appt this morning...i like Dr. Brenner and the nurse was really kind. I was told with my hx of endo that i should go straight to IVF. It all feels so overwhelming....i didnt think i would need to go that route so soon.

has anyone had that suggested to them before? was it because of endo?

He did give me the option of having an HSG then doing IUI w/ clomid but he doesnt see high chances of me getting preggers with IUI.

I requested to do the HSG and IUI (if there's no blockage) this month...since i need time to figure out some insurance stuff anyway.

I went straight to IVF also, but not due to endo. I had a genetic condition and sperm issues. I will say it is a big jump. I think doing IUI, if you need the time to get insurance in order, is a great idea. If you don't get a BFP,at least it will prepare you for some parts of IVF that I was not prepared for.

we were advised by a couple dr.'s to go right to IVF bc of male issues. we decided to wait and try some other options and got preg. on our own.

We only have a few vials of sperm - so we are going to go straight to IVF.

Ditto.

Dr. Brenner is very to the point - if he said that, its because he thinks it is the best shot at getting you pregnant the fastest. If you want to slow down- I would just tell him! Good luck!

I don't know your whole story like how long you have been TTC and if/how the endo was diagnosed, losses, etc, but I think it's a good idea to get the HSG. People with endo get pregnant naturally all the time.

I had an endo blockage removed and after 3 mo of TTC naturally then they sent me to RE who put me on clomid. Femara would be better than clomid b/c it wont thin your lining which can be an issue with endo. (I eventually switched after 2 months on clomid). I went into TTC knowing I had endo and no one suggested IVF until about 4 failed IUI cycles.

I agree. Do you know how severe your endo is?

I had moderate endo and had a lot of it removed during my 1st laparoscopy. After my HSG, my RE did not find any reason to jump right into IVF. Good luck!Chat Icon

We have been TTC since Oct 2010. i was diagnosed w/ endo about 3 years ago during a routine visit to my OB/GYN. i expressed concern about fribroids (since every woman in my family has it) so he did an sono and found a huge cyst on my ovary. i had a lap done and he found alot of scar tissue. He said it was so much it was like a veil covering my abdomin area Chat Icon he had to remove everything just to get to the cyst. After surgery i went on BCPs. Got married in Aug 2010 and stopped BCPs in Sept 2010.

i have never had a BFP, my OB/GYN put me on clomid for 3 cycles and said if it didnt work then he wanted to do the HSG but i decided to go to the RE after it didnt work. My sono in Feb showed no new cysts but yesterday at Dr. Brenner's he saw 2. Dont know if that's from the Clomid last month or if the endo is back.

The endo can always come back. I guess the hsg would bs a good next step. Do you have Ivf coverage?

My re said that after 4 med iui/natural cycles that my issue might be tubal where the egg isn't being propelled down the tubes. It's common in endo patients but sometimes something just works and it happens. I repeated the hsg and my tubes were open . We don't have any IFv coverage but are strongly considering it after 7 months with re. (sept will be a yr since my tubes were unblocked so I feel like we technically haven't been TTC for a full yr). For me, my fear is doing Ivf and having a loss but the dr said I'm being treated for my immune issues so there isn't anything else known right now that can be an issue. If I hd coverage I would have done it by now. I want a whole bunch of tests before I shell out $10k though.

i do have IVF coverage but for me to move directly onto IVF i have to do a waiver. They usually require 12 iuis before getting IVF coverage. Dont know how long the waiver process will take. its just so much to take in...all these blood tests, DH going for sperm analysis, thinking that my best chance is IVF.....

thanks for the info about endo and the egg not being propelled into the tubes. never heard that before, i will bring it up next appt!

Re: Straight to IVF?

i have mild endo and had one blocked tube (now gone after an ectopic). there are really 2 issues with endo: the immune system side to it which can effect implantation, and the physical side to it which can effect how your organs are oriented (tube blockage, cysts on the ovaries, etc).

i think going straight to IVF would be the quickest and most aggressive approach. with that said, you could get pregnant using IUI if your tubes are clear. if you have to wait for the waiver, i would pursue the HSG and IUI for a few months and see what happens. this way you are still doing something. but i would certainly not do 12 IUIs before moving onto IVF.

Re: Straight to IVF?

The straight to IVF recommendation is common if you have an identified condition (e.g., endo, blocked tubes, etc.). My friend went straight to IVF with Dr. Brenner and got PG her first try after months of failed treatments with another doctor. Don't forget, his job is to get you PG as quickly as possible. I know it's overwhelming but you just have to surrender to the process and go for it! Best of luck.

Re: Straight to IVF?

i have endo - i did 2 clomid iuis...then a LAP..then 3 months on Lupron to kill the endo- then an injectible iui.

All failed.

I wish I was advised to go straight to IVF. I truly believe that I would be pregnant by now if I did.

Although..id probably be second guesing it, like you are now...but I really fell now, that IVF is the way to go for endo and that IUIs are a waste of time, energy and emotions..

good luck!!!
