Rats!!!
That is right I said rats!!! Apparently when the exteminator was here for the carpenter ants, he thinks we have rats living under our deck and shed. I know my neighbor across the street has had them in his yard. DISGUSTING!!! The exterminator wants $500 for two months service for this. Crazy. So I talk to the neighbor and he has trapped 61 over the last 2 summers. We believe they are coming from the sump. Last summer they started dumping water in there that they collected from the storm drains south of montauk. and now we have rats. It is beyond gross.
Wait till the hubby finds out he is going to be in the rat trapping busines...because I am not spending $500 every 2 months until this problem is eradicated.
Ewwww...vent over!

Re: Rats!!!
you can get rid of them on your side for 2 months but the neighbor has them still so he also needs to get an exterminator.

Re: Rats!!!
Call the town. This happened to my mom in Bellmore (she lives next to a Walgreen's and they were coming from the dumpsters), and the town came and took care of it. Worth a shot!

It doesn't matter if he gets an exterminator either. The problem is they are coming from the sump after they dump the water from the sewer drains. He has problem helped the most by killing them. The issue is that we would all be paying a fortune if every 2 months we are dishing out $500 to have exterminators bait and trap them.

Re: Rats!!!
Try Suburban. I had them here for ants the other day. One year of service is $700 and they come 4 times a year and they include pest removal. I think 2 months of service was $250

Get some outdoor cats!!!
That is exactly what I told my husband last night. My mom has 3 kittens up for adoption right now and I am seriously considering taking the female to be an outdoor cat for us.

Re: Rats!!!
We had a problem in our neighborhood (we have a 20 acre open field behind our house) I probably bought 6-8 rat poison packs at the hardware store and put them under our deck, shed and anywhere else i saw them. (they were eating the "fruit" of our dogwood trees too).
The idea is that you want them to bring it back to the nest, so that's why I bought a lot. We found one dead one and then never saw them again. (that was 2 years ago)
now don't get me started on bunnies.

I hear ya on the bunnies too! They developed a nursery a few blocks up and the bunnies have relocated to my backyard.

Re: Rats!!!
We had them too in Bellmore. We had the whole neighborhood buy the bait things...they're liek a box with poison in the middle and two holes--one on each side.
This was last winter...and everyone says they're gone. I never saw one to begin with!
We also have cats in our neighborhood, so maybe thats why?
The whole thing makes me wanna vom!

I dont know if I would trust that a cat woudl keep away a rat. Mouse yes but rat, not so sure. I wouldnt want to risk my cat getting harmed by a rat.

please don't consider adopting a cat to help with the rat problem. one cat wouldn't be that helpful and i'm sure chances are in the end the cat would get hurt somehow.
besides there's no need to add to the stray cat situation either.
sorry but i could never ever do that to a cat.

We live in North bellmore and have a huge problem. How did you get the neighborhood to buy the boxes? No one else will do anything. They just let DH and I pay an exterminator.... They got into our house a few years ago. But, since our house is soo old everytime we let up on the bi-monthly service they get back in. I wish the neighbors would help. They see them outside from time to time but, don't do anything!!!!!
And FTR.. the town is useless. I had them come several times. Once they put boxes down for 6 weeks but, they are required to pick them up unless they see more activity signs. I had found a dead one and called them and that wasn't enough evidence?????????

Yes. The exterminator told me they wouldn't help anyway and that the poop actually attracts the rats.
