Having a baby in 2 days and am realizing I'm not a "kid" person!!
We had family over yesterday... DH's 2 nephews and his 3 year old girl cousin.
OMG... I was on on edge from the get go! Especially with the little girl, who hasn't been to our house in over a year. She was TOUCHING everything and not listening to her mom at all. (Then again, the mom was just saying empty threats about punishments and not carrying through on any consequence, so I blame a lot on that).
It was driving me up a wall because we have our whole house set up for our baby's arrival and she was touching everything even after being told not to - the swing, his toys, pressing all the buttons on the play yard mobile, his little stuffed animals, his little adirondack chair - everything I cleaned for HIM. (Yes - I'm a bit of a germ phobe.) Then when the kids were in the basement playing, she kept coming up with things from an area she wasn't supposed to be in (around exercise machines, tools, etc.). She even opened the door to the refrigerator in our laundry room and told his nephews we had ice cream, so now they all wanted ice cream. (we didn't have ice cream). Everyone thought she was so cute and I just thought it was ANNOYING!! Then they were eating pizza and I just kept imagining them wiping their hands on our couch. Then one of them had a bad cough, so I was internally freaking out about that. I just couldn't relax!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??? Even my DH was awesome with her! She just wanted to go where "Joe-Joe" was going. He has the patience of a SAINT with kids, which I adore about him. At the same time, it is a big mirror to me at how I do NOT have that patience! Then I just think and get all stressed that I'm about to have a kid of my own!
Please tell me it's different with my own kids!! Maybe I'll gain patience as I go? I wonder how I'll be with my son's little friends, too. I just find kids ANNOYING, which is not good seeing as I'm having one THIS WEEK! I'm stressing out!

Youre probably super on edge because youre having your son in a couple days! You want the house perfect. I get that.Im a germaphobe too...but with kids,I know Im going to have to let go of that in some ways. They are messy! and germs are good for them! Dont stress it :)

Ok, breathe. It will be ok. I understand, because while I generally like children one of my older siblings has kids who are a bit out of control. There are days when I'm around them that I wonder why on earth I want children. BUT from what I see in my own family it is totally different when they are your own. My mom is not a kid person at ALL but she was a good mother to us and adored us. Had a lot of patience too. You will be fine!

Re: Having a baby in 2 days and am realizing I'm not a "kid" person!!
Ill be the first to admit I am not that kid friendly. I dont LOVE everyone else's kids. I could never be a teacher or work with children. I always feared that this would make me a bad mother.
After talking to other non kid friendly people who do have kids, Im not worried one bit. I know I will LOVE my kids to no end. I already do . And Im confident in my parental abilities. Im sure you will feel completely different when it comes to yours too.

That is totally normal IMO. I sometimes feel the same about my nieces/nephews or other people's children. I think it is VERY different when they are your children.
My mom is also the same as someone above posted. She had 5 children and was a SAHM. She is 64 and doesnt work but wants to do something. I mentioned she should do something with children and she says "why would I do that I don't like kids!" It sounds crazy to think that someone who has 5 children and my LO will make 11 grandchildren doesnt like kids. It's sooooo different when they are not yours.

1. It is always different when it's your own kid. Always.
2. The girl was behaving appropriately for her age; her mother, however, was not, I HATE parents who don't follow through with discipline.
3. You have every right to be a germaphobe but her touching his belongings isn't going to get him sick unless she has a cold and was actually chewing on his pacifiers.
4. If pizza freaks you out, you might want to consider covering all of your furniture in saran wrap before your LO arrives

maybe its not really the kid.. its the parents lack of ability to discipline the child that's bothering you.. i can see how that translates into not being a kid person.

Call me crazy but I would never have had that many people over the week I am going for a C/S and have everything set up for a baby.
Hopefully you will transition to mommy easily and have no bumps in the road.

Re: Having a baby in 2 days and am realizing I'm not a "kid" person!!
The kid's behavior was just that..a kid. You are stressed to the max and they were pushing your buttons but I do not think that makes you a non kid person. You will learn to let certain things go and the more you try to control the more you will LOSE control. As for what LB said, cover your couches if pizza freaks you out because poop is a whole different story.

Awesome points.
As for number 4, .
I know things will get dirty... I just also know that some kids use couches as napkins and THAT irritates the crap out of me when I see them wipe their hands on furniture.
I just hate when I'm paying more attention to other people's kids in my house than their own parents are. THAT'S probably what bothers me more than anything!

You will gradually become a kid person. Baby starts out relatively quiet and gets progressively louder each year. It eases you into it.

Me too. I pray that something innate happens to me when this kid comes and I step up and do the right thing. Right now, all I worry about is how I'm not going to completely resent the burden put on me.
I find kids to be utterly annoying BUT usually the really annoying ones have really dopey parents that don't discipline them and think the antics are cute. Based upon the minimal tolerance I have for kids now, I can't imagine I would have any patience for my kid behaving the way that little girl did at your home.

Well, what this girl was doing sounds completely normal for a 3 year old. But you have 2.5 years or so to get used to the idea.

well...I'm with you with a week to go and I don't like my own kids right now (LOL j/k a little) I have no patience with them. Thankfully DH is around otherwise they might be tied up (again kidding!)
You have a lot of time to get used to it.
