Beach Wheelchairs

ARE EXPENSIVE Chat Icon

They are made, mostly, of plastic. But they are anywhere from $2,000 - $3,600, on average, on the sites I found.

So for when my brother goes to Atlantis we are thinking of just buying a small, easy to fold up, wheelchair for the pool and we'll take him to the pool in that and unfortunately, we'll have to skip the beach. This is a shame but I guess we should be glad that we can, at least, do the pool.

Anyone have any experiences with this?

Here's an idea of what some of them look like:

Re: Beach Wheelchairs

Did you call and ask them if they have beach wheelchairs at the resort? I'm only asking because I was looking at the Suffolk County Parks guide yesterday, and it said that a couple of their beaches have beach wheelchairs that patrons can use.

I found this, granted it came from the Disney Cruise Line website, but it's worth a shot to call them and ask if they can rent one to you for the beach, or if they know of a company that will rent them.

•Wheelchairs need to be collapsible. No electric wheelchairs permitted. Beach wheelchairs available at Dolphin Cay for duration of interaction. Wheelchairs are permitted at Dolphin Cay

Yeah we asked Chat Icon

We even asked if we could buy or rent one for them -- we were willing to pay for it but they said they don't have anything like that -- just motorized wheelchairs that are NOT permitted on the beaches.

Yes, we got lucky in Bermuda that they had one beach wheelchair we could use -- but Atlantis doesn't have that, which is surprising, but they don't.

That's why, next time, Disney is the way to go -- whether we do a cruise or go to Disneyworld. It seems like no matter what hurdle you have -- they make it so it is no problem. A friend of the family - her daughter has a disorder where she cannot process wheat/gluten and needs a special diet. She was nervous when planning her trip to Disney but the people at Disney said, this is a magical place, no worries about her condition, her food will be prepared the right way and you don't have to worry about bringing anything - we'll take care of it. She struggles so much when going places and what peace of mind to know it won't be an issue there! So when I heard that I said, we should go there next time.

But it is a good idea to call and ask -- thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Beach Wheelchairs

it is too bad that they dont have any to rent! I am surprised by that! Anywhere we have ever gone with my grandma, we were able to rent one. I hope you are able to find one.

Have you looked to see if there are medical supply companies that rent to vacationers, like Baby's Away does with baby gear when you travel?
