Lifting

I know I asked this when I was pregnant a few months ago but just want confirmation again..

Its ok to lift things while pregnant right? Im only almost 4 weeks and I had to lift a 45 lb dog today on to an examination table. The nurse told me (last time) that as long as its not too much weight to hurt myself and if its something I normally do its ok. Is that right?

Lifting cant cause a miscarriage right?

Yes, that's right. As long as you're body is already used to it it's fine. I carried around my 35 lb 2 yr old my whole pregnancy. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm 38 weeks and in "nesting" mode and decided that I didn't like where the dresser was in my bedroom today, so I moved it. By myself, while DH was at work. Chat Icon

Haven't gone into labor yet!

Re: Lifting

When I was around that stage that was my suggested weight limit too. I work in construction so that limit was foreign to me. I lift much heavier things normally. I gauge how comfortable I feel when lifting anything. Now my 'limit' is 20 pounds but I know I am lifting more than that constantly at work. I know MY limits and that is what I go on.

Thanks for the info. So its really just a matter of what I feel comfortable with right? It wont harm the baby. Worst that can happen is that I throw my back out or something right?

Re: Lifting

I asked my Dr. about this. He said the baby is so well-protected in there that lifting won't do anything to the baby. He said though that pregnant women are more likely to pull muscles or throw their backs out when lifting since the muscles around the uterus are starting to loosen and stretch. so basically, it's more for your safety than the baby's.
