Garage door- lead paint- disposal q's

So we ordered a new garage door last weekend from home depot and they sent their third party installers on Wednesday. While they were here they tested the door for lead paint and of course it tested positive. Mind you, they never mentioned anything about said test when we bought the door, but whatever .

Now hd called me today that they want an additional $388 ( on top of the $68 we already paid) to take the old door down and dispose of it properly!!!! Has anyone run into this before??? I really have an issue with paying half the price of the new door to have the old one removed!!!! If we remove it, will the town take it with a special pick up???

Help!

I dont know if they are required to do this, but they should have TOLD you first. Also...I hate to say it but I do think its their way of somehow getting more $$$ from you. People throw out things with lead paint on them all the time. I never knew there to be a code on this.Chat Icon

I would call the town and ask them if you can throw things out that size

if you have special pickup (we do) just call the town/village for a special pick up and ask how they want it. Don't mention about the lead paint. The worse case scenario you might have to cut it down so wear a mask and goggles saw the damn thing into pieces and wrap it up and off it goes. Lead paint is toxic but you really need to eat/breathe it in for long periods of time. As long as you wear protective stuff and wash your body/clothing after your done cutting into it you will be fine. Just don't like the dogs/children play in that area until its cleaned up.

Thats what I just did. The town says they'll take it and didn't question ANYTHING about it?

So I guess DH has to take it down with some friends and leave it on the side of the house til the town comes and gets it?Chat Icon
