BTDT - What questions to ask during a bathroom estimate?
We've never had any work done at house so I am not sure what I should ask.
I am going to start getting estimates for a bathroom renovation. Any tips from BTDT ppl?
Thanks!

Are they insured/licenced? That's the MOST important to me.
Do they have references? How long will the project last? Will you come every day? (some contractor only show up every 1-2 days, dragging a 1 week project into 3 weeks) Do you do the work yourself or do you subcontract? That's what come to mind right away!

These are good questions...I'd also ask how they like to receive payments. Some break it into thirds, some are asking you for money every five minutes. Just so you know what to expect.
Another one: will they pass on their contractor discount to you at tile stores, plumbing supply stores, etc.

Just remodeled 2 baths and have an amazing contractor. He works alone so he takes a little longer than those with a crew to complete but his work is impeccable and he is reliable, reasonable and trustworthy. FM me if you want his info. IF interested you can come over and view his work.

Re: BTDT - What questions to ask during a bathroom estimate?
If you want to control all of the items installed, you can buy them yourself and ask if they'll do a "strictly labor" estimate.
For non-strictly-labor:
ask about tile allowance cost
ask if they will be installing over existing floor
ask about their use of greenboard vs. wonderboard
tell them if you want tile floor to ceiling or half.
grout color

What is better, Greenboard or Wonderboard?

Re: BTDT - What questions to ask during a bathroom estimate?
I'd definitely write EVERY single thing you could think that you want done (even if in layman's terms) and even if you're not sure if you want it (I'd rather have them have to deduct things then start tacking things on) and ask for the estimate on ALL those things in writing.
Ask if it includes demolition...
We just had a kitchen done, had a vague written estimate that the contractor wrote up, and found out after we hired him that that "didn't include" installation of any cabinets, or appliances (amongst other integral parts of a "kitchen remodel")
