Job interviews and pregnancy

I am a NYC school teacher and was excessed from my position (which is different then being excessed on Long island- I still have a job but I don't know where or doing what). Idealy I would like to be placed back at my school as they know I am pregnant and are very pregnant and new mom friendly. But I can't count on that and have been applying to schools that have openings. I recieved an email about coming in for an interview next week... I don't think the principal will be able to tell I am pregnant if I wear looser fitting clothes (I haven't popped yet). However, come sept. I will be just about 6 months pregnant. My question is do I tell him in the email and make sure they still want me to even come in, in person at the interview, or wait to see if they offer me a position and then tell them? I would rather not wait till the first week of school becaue I think I will stress just thinking about telling them that late in the game. Any ideas/advice?

I'd wait to see if you get the job first. You don't want to be discriminated against and honestly if you wait until after you get the job and tell them, they really can't do anything. It's not putting them in a bad spot or misleading them. It's not like you're going to quit and leave them high and dry. You have to think of you and your family! You know these principals are worrying about their situation as well Chat Icon

Just my opinion. Good Luck! Chat Icon

Thanks!! Its just that I am not tenured yet and I don't want to put a target on my back for not being upfront. But if I tell them right away they probably won't even ask me to come in.

You're right! I don't think it'd affect tenure. Who knows, tenure might be abolished one day soon!
I'm not tenured either and am up for it around the time I go for maternity leave! I'll never get it Chat Icon
I wish you luck!!

I would say go for the interview and if/when they offer you the position, tell them by the way I am expecting due in XXX. Legally they cant discriminate but that doesnt mean they wont if they know beforehand...

I wouldn't say anything if you aren't showing.

What type of maternity leave are you planning? 6/8 weeks...then it's really not a huge problem.

Sometimes you have to think about yourself first - you know they are if they might take your pregnancy into account for not asking you to interview!
