*****"Controversial" QOTD - 7.23.11*****

My DH & friends & I often ask each other/talk about this question.....Be honest when you answer & don't be offended by my answer! Hahaha Chat Icon

Obviously, it'd be great for our children to be both, but if u could pick- Would you rather have a good-looking kid who wasn't smart, or a smart kid who wasn't good-looking? (assume whichever trait u choose would carry over into his/her adult life)

**********************************************

To be brutally honest, I'd rather my kid be good-looking. Before you judge me, or decide your own answer, think about it..... Good-looking people (IMO) have it easier. There have even been studies about how they r treated differently/nicer. Im not being totally superficial, I honestly feel like their life would be easier. They'd also be less likely to get picked on in school. Dont get me wrong, obviously being smart is awesome & will get u far in life, but unfortunately in today's society, I feel like your appearance matters more. So I'd rather have a good-looking kid who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Funny question!

This is hard! I would love to say I'd rather they be smart but I agree with what you're saying about how life might be easier for someone who's good looking. I don't know, I guess I'd hope for one of each! Chat Icon

I would rather them be smart. That way they would know good looks are fleeting, but intelligence will last a life time.

Now, are you talking about a child who is butt ugly or just average? Chat Icon If my child was average looking I'd rather they be smart but if they are butt ugly then I'd rather they be attractive Chat Icon Funny question BTW

I would 100% absolutely prefer them to be intelligent:

1) I consider myself pretty smart and I know I might lose my patience with a not so smart child (more so when they're an adult probably than when they're a child!)....just being honest!

2) If he or she was super smart I'd assume they would have a career that affords them certain luxuries and could afford any surgeries to correct certain "ugly" traits if they actually chose to change anything about themselves. Your personality/intelligence is not something that can necessarily be changed, but as we see nowadays, physical traits are quite easy to change.....although I would always tell my child they are beautiful as they are.

it's the sad truth, but yes they do!

but to answer the OP's question, I would rather have my children be smart and know that outside beauty is superficial. It's whats inside that counts

This is difficult to answer.

I would prefer my DC to be smart. I feel like with age, people can find ways to make themselves more attractive. (ie they know how to style their hair better, wear makeup, wear nice clothing and in drastic situations - there is always plastic surgery)

Both things I also thought about. My first thought however was that no parent (at least no good parent) ever thinks their child is ugly...and yea, when theyre loaded with money they can support me when Im older. Chat Icon

As the PP said, you can fix ugly. You really can't make yourself smarter.

I can't believe this is even a question. Chat Icon

There is no contest...SMART.

Life isn't "easier" for good looking people, it just appears that way, because the grass is greener on the other side.

Looks get you only so far and then they become fleeting. Who cares if you're absolutely gorgeous if you are so stupid you can't put together an intelligible thought?

Smart! I think about successful, smart people that I know that could be considered okay looking, not good looking or beautiful, that are genuine, sweet, friendly, etc. They have great, lucrative jobs because they're smart and all their personality traits paired with their success has landed them wonderful spouses and happy families.

A good looking person may be treated nicely at bars, restaurants, in high school by the opposite sex, etc. But, if they don't have good jobs, don't make decent money, they will have a harder time in the long run. Even if they're nice and friendly and have a nice spouse, they'll have other struggles that can take away from their happiness.
