If I needed the space I would go for it and not worry about being out of place. It's not like you're building a mansion among bungalows, and others may do the same with time.

Considering there are almost no houses the same in my neighborhood, I would say "sure".
I also grew up in the only Levittown house on our street with a front dormer....

Yes, somebody's got to be first! 
You may start a trend, unless there is some local buliding that prevents it, but you can usually apply for a variance.
I grew up on a block of capes. Some had the dog-ear dormers, & back dormers, or had the first floor extended in the back, or a garage added, but my parents was untouched ( b/c the previous owenrs rented it out.) Of each type of renovation there was usually more than one, so they were probably trends at various times.
Then all of a sudden in the mid-e80s, almost all of the houses that had kids put full dormers on.
About 10 years later, front porches became the big thing. Again, someone had to be the first person.

My house is the only fully dormered house on a block full of ranches.
I don't care. If anything it increases my neighbor's property values.
My one neighbor says I have "the centerpiece" on the block.

I would do it and we did do it. My house is the biggest on the block and it doesnt bother me at all. My house is how we needed it for our family. I really dont care what the neighbors think. They dont pay the mortgage.
