Anyone ever done crown molding themselves?

We are planning on starting to put CM through out the house starting in the living room. I am confident in our ability to do it. But any tips. tricks, opinions?

If you aren't good at the corners, they have blocks you can buy at HD and Lowes that fit the corners, so you just need a butt joint to the corner pieces, instead of trying to match the mitered corners together.

If you do mitered corners, for paintable CM, caulk hides a lot of mistakes.... Chat Icon

you can use wood filler if you are doing stain wood as well.

It's not as good, though. I thought I was being a perfectionist by using stainable filler to fill in the nail holes around some of my trim.... it doesn't take stain anywhere near the same as the wood itself, so instead of a small hole, you wind up with a large patch of much lighter wood..... I wound up sanding off everything I put on, since it was less obvious that way.

Definitely worth testing out, though. It just didn't work on the wood I had, with the filler I had, with the stain I had. Other combos may turn out better....

Golden Rod, what do you recommend I use for filling nail holes, I am about to stain some bare molding around a door...

I suggest getting a scrap piece of wood and trying it out on that first...... I *don't* recommend filling several dozen holes on 50 feet of molding and THEN seeing if it stains properly..... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also, keep the filler amount small, and just in the nail hole. Try not to get it spread out on the actual wood too much. I think that was my biggest issue. I have large spots where the filler is. I have to now go back and sand down the filler around the nail holes to get to wood again.

I agree with this, as well! Our ceiling line is a little weird/complicated so we couldn't use the corner pieces, but caulk was really a lifesaver!

I also want to add, if you or your dh are like my dh, hide the children when you're doing it. I swear I've never heard my husband curse as much as he did when we were doing our molding Chat Icon

My DH installed ours. Took him a long time! HE did mitered corners. And yes, wood filler and caulk came in handy!

Some issues he ran into along the way was hanging the molding straight when the walls and ceiling were not completely straight either! The sheetrock in the house is old and slightly bowed in some areas.

Re: Anyone ever done crown molding themselves?

DH and I did one small room many years ago-we got so bummed with the process we didn't attempt any of the other rooms. Chat Icon The problem for us was our walls were way off square-so the joints kept popping up. Then we rented a pneumatic nailer from HD and it made such a mess-we can't get the nails to set in. We had to paint the nails white and hope no one needs to see them up close!
I don't mean to scare you-but its just not as easy as they make it sound on HGTV. We are thinking we will do the foam CMs in the other rooms-atleast they will have some flexibility to fit our crooked walls.

My dad and DH did it in 2 rooms. I love it. They used cheater corner pieces. We then caulked and it is lovely!

Does it look plastic and cheap? Have you done this in you own home? I'd love to see pics.

Re: Anyone ever done crown molding themselves?

Thanks everyone my DH has down moldings before just not crown moldings. He is a perfectionist which works well considering that I am as well when it comes to my home.
