oil question - cost & amt used

New homeowner here - I'm new to the world of oil (used for both home heating and hot water).

We got some rates/prices and ended up going with the same company that the previous owners used. The oil co said the homeowners used 900 gallons in one year. Does that sound high?? (It was a family of 4.)

We also opted for a rate lock & 1 year contract. I read in previous posts that many of you use COD...is that better?

We figure we'll give this a go for 1 year and then explore other options, when we are more knowledgable (if we don't convert to gas by then lol).

Please let me know if 900 gallons in 1 year is average/low/high and if we should consider COD next year.

Re: oil question - cost & amt used

I'd say 900 gallons a year is pretty average.

I used 700-750 in my smaller 1400 square foot previous house.

same here. we have a ranch about 1400 sqft and we average 700 gallons per year. we are not home all day so we keep the thermostat low during most of the day. we only turn it up for a few hours in the evening and then for about an hour in the morning to get the chill out.

i've done both fixed and ceiling rates with a service contract, never COD. COD you will get better prices. but i like having a company that i can call at midnight on a cold Jan night for a service call if something happens with my burner. we have an old burner so that's important to me.

Thanks for this information - I was wasn't sure of the advantages/disadvantages of locking in (w/ service contract) vs. COD.

We will probably use our oil in the same fashion as you, but we also need it to heat our water (there's a tankless coil in the boiler - no separate water heater tank). So I am guessing that's where we'll consume more - especially in the summer months. Thanks again!

Re: oil question - cost & amt used

you can get just a service contract with one company and then just get COD shipments.. that's what I've always done..

Who do you have your service contract with ?

This is what we have always done until we ran into a problem with our service co. and now we can't find any without locking in.

Re: oil question - cost & amt used

We used just under 900 gallons last year...paid approx $2300 ($2.64 per gal). Wish I could get that price this year!!!! Our house is approx 1800 sqft.

Re: oil question - cost & amt used

We average about 1,000 gal a year. We have a contract with Petro and have for years. I feel so much better knowing that I have a service contract and they will be right out if there's a problem. Any repairs are included so there are no hidden costs to maintain the equipment.

Our hot water heater just went and they were out within 2 hours to look at it. We had to replace it and they sent a salesman that same day.

COD makes me nervous in case of emergency.
