Re: Structural engineer???
Probably somewhere in the same area as a general inspection. 400-500 range?
You can use these guys. Excellent. Make sure to ask for the engineer.

We just used them. They were more than double everyone else I called (including other pe's) - it cost us $1000 AND - I was willing to pay it b/c I wanted the best. I had a horrible experience with them and would never recc that co. again. The listing agent after the fact also told me that she had clients that used them and were very disappointed as well.

That's interesting because I got that recommendation from a number of satisfied people here on LIF. I paid half that and I had a great experience. Who did your appraisal and what did they do to give you a bad experience?
The only time I have heard realtors say they don't like using them is because they are very thorough and can cause deals to fail by finding things many inspectors overlook. Who did your inspection?

Would you mind sharing what services they did for you (regular inspection, structural inspection) and what went wrong?
Please FM me if you prefer not to share publicly.
Thanks!

Interesting? I'm not sure what you mean by that. The cost is based in large part on the price of your home so my guess is that your house probably costs less than mine. I bet you still paid more than you would have elsewhere.
If anyone wants to know my experience please feel free to FM and I am more than happy to share. And, no, that is NOT the reason the realtor was not happy with them.

Re: Structural engineer???
We used Tauscher and were very pleased. They were recommended to us by several people. Actually we used them 3 times b/c the first 2 houses had some scary things in them...ie covered up water damage, mold in the walls, etc and we had to walk. Had it not been for them, we would have bought a money pit. The house we are currently in, they were right on with their assessment.
I don't recall them asking how much the house cost. I do remember them asking how many bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and the age of the house. I know there are several RE agents on this board, they have no investment in your sale, would you consider asking their opinion on engineers?
