what would you want in a guest room
i'm still working on my guest room and i have until August to finish as much as i can before my inlaws come yikes! i started thinking about what i would like in a guest room from the guests point of view and was hoping to get some more ideas...
the room we're using is VERY small, it has an awkward layout and it will also be our computer room - so i don't have much room for anything but the bed and a desk...but i'm still trying to think of things i can do to make the small space feel cozy and inviting...and not like the smallest room in the house that i crammed a bed into
the room has a closet which i plan on organizing but that's not going to happen before august - but i plan on eventually making a nice space for clothes, linens, bath towels, etc.
i was thinking a mirror, a lamp, maybe a nice coat rack to hang clothes/purse/bags???, there's a phone, maybe a desk clock???, i have a basket with magazines in there...anything else???
i was also thinking of getting a small flat screen tv to put out only when we have guests....i can put it on the desk where i usually keep my laptop...but i have to see if it's worth the expense...
any other ideas???

wow... seems like you know exactly what you want!... you should see mine... it has a bed, 2 nightstands, and literally the buffet table from our dining room set bc i cant fit it in the dr... i figured it looks nice as a dresser lol
We actually didnt hang anything on the walls or go crazy bc we knew it would become a babys room someday... fingers crossed for next yr!!!

i hear you on the baby's room! i have two large bedrooms on my second floor and that is where i originally had the guest bed set up but since we plan on filling those rooms up with babies soon we figured it would be best to figure out what to do with the guest room now instead of later when we're also worrying about a nursery...plus there is no way i want my in-laws, or any other guests, in the bedroom next door to the nursery...i rather that room be for extra toys until their is a second child to occupy it...but that left me with the smallest bedroom in the house so i'm trying to make it work...
i don't want the room to feel like an after thought, especially since my in-laws are going to be visiting a lot in the future...but at the same time i need a spot for my computer/files, to open mail...
i need a bigger house j/k

A clock is important to me in a guest room. It really annoys me if I am staying somewhere and I have to keep my phone on the nightstand to keep checking the time!

Re: what would you want in a guest room
We are OOS so when our family comes to visit, they have a guest room to stay in (and luckily their own bathroom).
Our guest room is pretty simple but it works:
Queen size bed Dresser (usually the first and or second drawer is empty for guests to use) Closet space with about 5-10 hangers Laundry basket for dirty clothes if they choose to wash them before they leave Alarm clock Magazines and Visitor Guide of our area Extra blankets in closet We keep the iron/ironing board in that room as it is the room I fold and iron anyway when not in use.
That's pretty much it. Only tv in the house is in the living room which is fine.
ETA: I always make sure the room has been freshened up before each guest - dusting, mopping, a little room spray, clean sheets.

Re: what would you want in a guest room
we have a queen size bed, 2 end tables with lamps, a chair with ottoman, dresser, cable tv (cable box has the clock) and a toddler bed (inherited from my parents and used pretty often, haha)

Re: what would you want in a guest room
heres mine.. the only thing i need to add is a wall mount TV, alarm clock/ipod dock, and maybe curtains.
the top of the dresser is less cluttered now.. i also store towels in the drawers
i have added this painting over the bed
i would just make sure you have enough room for your guests to store their luggage and maybe room in the closet for them to store the suitcase? i like the idea of a luggage stand.
good luck!

TV and alarm clock.
Agreed. And available outlets. I wouldn't bother wasting space with a coat rack if the room is really as small and awkwardly laid out as you say.

i have an outlet that is accesible, i didn't even think of that but that is def important...
when i said coat rack i meant the kind that hangs on the wall, like one with maybe 3 hooks...but i don't know if that would look weird???
thank you everyone!

Re: what would you want in a guest room
I just wanted to say I'd definitely do a tv. Even if it's just an old square tv (do those still work?), just something to be able to watch, ya know? Even when I'm exhausted I like to put on the tv for a few minutes before I go to sleep, catch up on the news or whatever and I find it annoying if I don't have a tv in the room to put on. Just my 2 cents! It sounds like you have a great plan though!

No, that's perfect actually. I just didn't think it was worth taking up floor space for!

Re: what would you want in a guest room
When my parents stay with me, I know they prefer a nightstand, lamp (my mom likes to read before bed) an alarm clock bc my Dad likes to get up early and my mom loves that I have a little ottoman /bench that she can rest her suitcase on instead of bending to the floor and a TV. They love having the TV.
I think a mirror would be a great idea too a full length one. Love this look, not sure you have the room.

Re: what would you want in a guest room
In addition to what pp said (alarm clock, extra blankets, hangers, towels) I usually leave a couple of bottles of water and some small snacks, like granola bars, especially if I don't think the person staying w/me will be comfortable enough to rummage through the kitchen if they get hungry. I also have a basket full of random toiletries, from baby wipes to travel size shampoos, and stuff from Bath & Body Works that I don't use, that they can use and bring into the bathroom should they like to.

Re: what would you want in a guest room
why not mount the flat screen to the wall you could always get one of those fireplace dvd's or put photos to rotate when its not in use for TV

Re: what would you want in a guest room
why do you need a desk in there? if the room is that small it seems like a desk would take up a lot of space.
I would definitely want a nice flat screen tv, a mirror, and easy access to a bathroom lol

i wrote above that i am using the room as my office space as well as a guest room....i need a place to sort mail, pay bills, keep files, use the computer...i need the room to be multi-purpose and not just a guest room...so that's why it needs a desk...otherwise i'm wasting a room in my house 80% of the time...

originally we were going to mount a flatscreen TV above the desk...but then i found these nice picture ledges and i think i'm going to do something with those instead...i figure when we have kids it will be a nice spot to have family photos to look at while i'm at my desk....and doing something creative with the picture ledge, frames and accessories is cheaper than buying a huge TV for the wall...i figure i can get a small flatscreen for like $150 in walmart...or take my husband's small flatscreen out of the garage when we have guests
