Am I being a snotty witch?
So my FIL and I have this very strained relationship. He rsvp'ed no to my wedding, I wasn't allowed in his home for years, it goes on and on.
he is schizophrenic, and really trying to be nice to me. He has slip ups, but nothing major that I can't shake off.
He emailed me name suggestions, and I wrote back thanks, keep them coming. He really wants baby to have a Spanish name. All names offered are names that I can't even pronouce, better yet, consider. So he calls DH and tells him that he knows I am lying and I have names picked, I am just humoring him and he doesn't appreciate it.
Fast forward to last night, we had a decent phone call. He says he saw a 100.00 christening gown in the mall that he wants to get for the baby. We don't know the sex, I don't know what this gown looks like...I said no, that is okay.
He said oh okay. I used the excuse that I may not want to put a boy in a gown. I might want to, I don't know. I just feel like this guy has to rush for everything. He wants to beat out others and buy the outfit.
since its his grandkid, should I have said yes? I am trying to be fair since their is bad blood between us and he is really trying
TIA

Yes, he really is trying. Maybe you can say "well, traditionally the God Mother buys the gown, so I don't want to take that away from whoever that is."
Maybe since he is so eager and excited to help, which is definatley how it sounds, you can suggest other things for him to buy like a car seat or something. This way you get your good and he gets to be the nice guy for buying it!

stephanie! you read my mind! He is buying the carseat now. I told him 100.00 was a lot to spend and I would rather the grandfather buy something more special for the baby, like something lifesaving . He said okay, but I know if I have a boy and put him in a gown, that is the end for me.

I don't think you're being a snotty witch at all. I wouldn't like anyone sending me names...that was a good way to tell him nicely.
As for the gown...it usually is the godmother's purchase.

I will tell him that next time, I just did not want to get into it incase he asks who I picked. It is still up in the air.

Re: Am I being a snotty witch?
Would you consider picking a Spanish middle name? It doesn't neccesarily have to be one of the ones he suggested. I think that would be a good way to meet him in the middle and keep the peace. However, if you're against picking a Spanish name than you most certainly shouldn't. At the end of the day this baby may be his grandchild, but it's your first born. What you want matters above all else.

yeah I am not completely against a spanish name or middle name. I would just want to go with whatever we liked. I like Mateo for a middle name, but DH veto'ed it.

Not at all! I don't think I would want anyone buying my baby a christening gown before I saw it. The carseat idea was perfect.
